Waterford Biography - Horace W. Davis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Davis was born in Wilson, Niagara County, New York, December 11, 1833, and is a son of Ebenezer Davis, who was a lumberman and miller of Gorham, Maine, and a pioneer in Michigan.
Davis then engaged in the raising of trotting horses, buying a farm for that purpose, and some of his horses, while not as rapid as the latest wonder, "Lou Dillon," for the time excited much admiration and astonishment.
Davis is not a man who is easily discouraged and he at once began an exhaustive study of the game fish and soon demonstrated that a hatchery which would ensure bass for the stocking of the many lakes and river was not only feasible but quite possible if done under the right conditions.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 98.6.11
First, she recognizes that most of Horace's poetry is metapoetry; or, as I would prefer to say, that for Horace the distinction between talking about poetry and talking about the world did not exist.
Like Horace, she is not committed to any single master, and her readings are always subject to revision, sometimes before our very eyes.
Since Horace is an author who seems to elude any theoretical net, Lowrie's eclectic approach serves her well and lets her see more of Horace than would a narrowly focused dogmatism.
