Engdahl said many of her works also focus on the entertainment industry, both in Europe and America, which she "believes affects people in a way that makes them susceptible to the economic elite." Using parody and satire, Jelinek tries to tear down the industry's facade, he said.
Engdahl said the academy may be criticized for choosing a writer whose works are not readily accessible to average readers, and that many will find hard to understand.
Engdahl said readers who open one of Jelinek's novels must "shake off the standard expectations you have when reading a novel, that is that a story is about to be told."

Like all supposed readers of witherswith well know, Horace Engdahl, Ph.D., is one of the foremost pop-literati idols of modern Sweden, and indeed the rest of the World too.
Fylking has on numerous occations been inexplicably present, sometimes cleverly disguised, in the so called Börsrummet, where the Winner is announced each year, where he proceeds to maraud the ceremony's quotidian issuance, frequently by loudly screaming "Äntligen!" (Finally!) when the winner's name is announced.
If ever the thought of such a coup d'état were to occur to you, remember Horace's clever but stern words "Innebörden i uttrycket "det fria ordet" är ju inte att man skulle ha rätt att yttra vad som helst i vilket sammanhang som helst".
