Horace himself was a keen dancer, a fact that the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen also mentions in his diary from his stay in Rome in 1833.(note 7) The musicality is of course easily recognised in his great - nephew, Sherlock.
Horace Vernet’s sister and her family, including Holmes’s mother, at this time a young girl, would not have wasted the opportunity of a stay in Rome while Horace was director of the French Academy.
