Horace Panter was the bass player with Coventry band, The Specials.
In their second hand suits and pork pie hats, the band were one of the most innovative to come out of the punk era, with their fusion of punk, reggae and ska.

Horace Panter, also known as Sir Horace the Gentleman Panter, was the bassist for the early Coventry Ska band the Specials.
Since the break-up of the Specials in 1981, Horace went on to play with General Public, and the Specials reincarnation in the 1990's.
Most recently Horace has been playing in the blues bands Box of Blues and Blues to go and leads the Coventry Ska-Jazz Orchestra.

The group lasted two albums, then years later Dave and Roger reunited to cover a song by The Staple Singers ("I'll Take You There") for the soundtrack of the movie "Threesome".

The Specials’ music reflected the influences of its ethnically diverse members—and Horace Panter’s adventurous, thick-toned bass lines hold true to this stylistic mix, as distinct ska, reggae, punk, funk, and R&B flavors can be identified in his lines.
Panter admits his feel for reggae didn’t come naturally, and that Golding and Selecter keyboardist Desmond Brown had to come to his flat and give him reggae lessons.
Horace begins the verse with a powerful double-stop figure, followed by a funky octave-E riff.

The beginnings of what was to become The Specials as we know them, came about when Jerry Dammers(keys), Horace Panter(bass), Lynval Golding (guitar), Silverton Hutchison (drums) and Tim Strickland (vocals) formed Coventry band 'The Automatics' in 1977.
The band hit the Coventry circuit, playing a unique mixture of punk and reggae to local punters, even securing a residency at Coventry's 'Mr.
American support act 'Suicide' were well received by the Clash's crowd, but the reggae influenced brand of punk that the Special AKA played didn't fare so well, getting them spat at and pelted with cans by many of the drunken punk audiences.
