Horace Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Horace (born Horatio) Smith (December 31, 1779 - July 12, 1849) was an English poet and novelist, perhaps best known for his participation in a sonnet-writing competition with Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Smith was born in London, the son of a London solicitor, and the fifth of eight children.
Horace first came to public attention in 1812 when he and his brother James (four years older than he) produced a popular literary parody connected to the rebuilding of the Drury Lane Theatre, after a fire in which it had been burnt down.

 Smith and Wesson
Smith & Wesson was founded by two men who shared a dream of developing a new type of firearm, one capable of being fired repeatedly without the annoyance of having to reload with loose powder, ball, and primer.
The dream became reality when Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson formed their first partnership in 1852 to manufacture a lever-action pistol that incorporated a tubular magazine which fired a fully self-contained cartridge.
Horace Smith eventually returned to his hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, and D.B. Wesson continued to work for Winchester as plant superintendent.

It followed the painful struggle of a fictional teacher, Horace Smith, to work within the restrictions imposed by the system--large classes, dated curricula, bureaucratic halls of mirrors--and still educate his adolescent students.
Horace is here again, still a teacher but now also chairman of a committee formed not merely to reorganize but to re- create his high school.

Horace Smith had entered the contest himself, and included his actual poem among the parodies as "An Address without a Phoenix." Among the poets parodied were Wordsworth, Southey, Byron and Scott.
Smith was a friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley, and was his guest when Shelley was living at Marlow in 1817, before he left England.
Smith had made his fortune in the stock market by 1820, and devoted the rest of his life to writing, publishing numerous novels, the best of which is thought to be Brambletye House, or Cavaliers and Roundheads (1826), an imitation of the historical novels of Scott.

 E. A. Poe Society of Baltimore
Horace Smith is one of the authors of the "Rejected Addresses." He is, perhaps, the most erudite of all the English novelists, and unquestionably one of the best in every respect.
Smith wrote: "Then say what secret melody was hidden/ In Memnon's statue which at sunrise played." Poe has his "Echoes" say in "The Coliseum," rather inappropriately, considering their Roman provenance: "Prophetic sounds and loud, arise forever from us, and from all Ruin, unto the wise,/ As melody from Memnon to the Sun" (13).
I find little reason for Poe's praise of this weak double novel by Smith, unless it be in Smith's citation of La Motte Fouqué in the preface to the book or the fact that the second work is "Mesmerism; A Mystery," dealing with a subject of general interest to Poe (16).
