EMILE-JEAN-HORACE VERNET - Raphael at the Vatican
The younger Raphael is sketching a peasant woman and her baby, to be transformed into a Madonna and child for which he was famous.
It is not surprising, therefore, that he purchased the Salon version of Vernet's Raphael at the Vatican, which like many other "lives of the artists" pictures celebrates not only artistic achievement, but also the crucial role of the patron.
Vernet was highly favored by Louis-Philippe, and in the 1830s and '40s his painting style was criticized for demonstrating "middle of the road" qualities deemed comparable to Louis-Phillipe's politics -- that is, his paintings seemed styleless, most notably in contrast to his contemporary, Delacroix.

The Uniform Plates of Vernet - Lami
Carle Vernet worked on the illustrations of the Bardin regulations and was thus in a prime position to depict those uniforms.
Both Horace Vernet and Eugene Lami were still in their early years during the days of the Empire, yet, old enough to remember and be good witnesses.
Eugene Lami was born in 1800 and was a pupil of both Antoine Gros and Horace Vernet.

Art and Artists of Our Time, Part 20 of the Introduction
His grandfather, Joseph Vernet, was a marine-painter of distinction in his time, although his works are long out-grown, but he did something, perhaps, to break the spell of the old classic formulas, and thus entitled his work to respectful consideration.
All that gives Vernet a right to be remembered is the fact that he was one of the first to put into his battle-pieces something of that life which we of to-day recognize and applaud in the pictures of the men whom we count among the true battle painters.
But his art was in itself superficial and uninteresting, and the contents of his pictures more superficial and uninteresting still, and the picture we have selected to illustrate our note is perhaps the only one that retains any hold upon the public that does not care for the military triumphs of France.

The grandson of the landscape and marine painter Claude-Joseph Vernet, Horace Vernet studied with his father Carle, from whom he was to inherit a lifelong interest in equestrian subjects.
Horace assisted his father on the latter’s battle paintings before making his Salon debut in 1812 with a military painting of his own, commissioned by King Jerome of Westphalia, the brother of Napoleon.
A committed Bonapartist, Vernet was to paint numerous scenes of the military victories of the Empire, many commissioned by the Duc d’Orléans, later King Louis-Philippe.

 Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789)
The excellence of Vernet's figure drawing and his mastery of gesture and expression brought his work close to the admired genre of history painting.
Later in Paris in 1781 Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes took Vernet's advice on painting from nature out of doors; this was to have important consequences for French landscape painting in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Excellent copies or replicas of Vernet paintings appear from time to time, but too little is known about his studio practice always to ascertain whether they are autograph or by some good copyist such as Lacroix.

Horace Vernet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vernet was born to Carle Vernet, another famous painter, who was himself a son of Claude Joseph Vernet.
Vernet quickly developed a disdain of Renaissance Classicism, and decided to create his "own" art form.
In fact, when Emperor Louis Napoleon asked Vernet to remove a certain obnoxious general from one of his paintings, he replied, "I am a painter of history, sire, and I will not violate the truth." Vernet died in his hometown of Paris in 1863.

 Biography
With Hubert Robert, he became a leading exponent of a type of idealized and somewhat sentimental landscape that had a great vogue at this time.
Vernet was particularly celebrated for his paintings of the sea-shore and ports, and on returning to Paris in 1753 he was commissioned by Louis XV to paint a series of the sea-ports of France.
Vernet belonged to a family of French painters of which two other members attained distinction: his son Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet (1758-1836) known as 'Carle', and his grandson Émile-Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863) known as Horace Vernet.
