Bottomley turned his attention to the promotion of British stock and in 1908 was charged with conspiracy to defraud when it was revealed that his Trust had issued about 10 million shares in excess of its stated capital.
Bottomley was forced to vacate his seat of South Hackney in the Commons that he had held for the Liberal Party since 1905.
Bottomley was active as a speaker in recruiting campaigns during World War I and won a handsome fee of £7,800 per annum from the newspaper magnate Lord Northcliffe for writing a weekly article in his Sunday Pictorial.

In 1918 he returned to Parliament as an Independent MP (with almost 80% of the vote).
In May 1919 Bottomley founded The People's League hoping it would be 'a great Third Party' which would represent 'the People' against organised labour and organised capital.
He created the "John Bull Victory Bond Club" (a forerunner of Premium Bonds) as a mechanism for small savers to lend money to the Government, receiving prizes rather than interest; again a combination of fraud and mismanagement sank the scheme in 1921.

The original reporting was May 30, 1922 and concerned his sentencing for frauds on 23 counts for which he was penalized for 7 years..
The initial info states "Among the many "con" men who have existed in finance and commerce Horatio Bottomley was the master; in one 10 year period he promoted nearly 50 companies and had more than 60 writs filed against him.
I'm not sure at this point why this info was included in my Aunt's information about family but her mom was a Bottomley so must assume there is some connection.
