In 1851 he returned to Washington to superintend its erection, and in the autumn of 1852 he was attacked by brain fever, of which he died in Somerville near Boston on the 18th of December.
Among other works of Greenough may be mentioned a bust of Lafayette, the Medora and the Venus Victrix in the gallery of the Boston Athenaeum.
Greenough was a man of wide culture, and wrote well both in prose and verse.

In 1832, Greenough was commissioned to design a statue of General Washington standing, but chose to model his statue on a statue of the Greek God Zeus.
The original Mills design for the Washington Monument would have included a Greek temple on top of which there was supposed to be a statue of George Washington driving a six-horse chariot.
One suspects he was seeking a larger commission, since acceptance of this statue would have also generated the commission for the six horses.

The exhibition of 15 sculptures, 48 drawings and related materials is the culmination of a multi-year examination of over 170 drawings by Greenough which have been on loan to the Middlebury College Museum of Art from the private collection of George R. Rinhart.
Drawings by sculptors are exceedingly rare, and Greenough was unusual in his life-long passion for the medium.
Other important works in the exhibition are Greenough's early commissioned busts of John Quincy Adams,1828-29,The Boston Atheneum, and George Washington,1832, The Andalusia Foundation, as well as the drawing of George Washington, 1832-34, The National Archives, which Greenough submitted to Congress.
