The horde bases are all 40mm wide and the circular bases are 25mm in diameter.
The base is the full 600p x 600p permitted under the Hordes of the Things rules, athough this can be reduced for playing purposes by counting either the paving stones or the water itself as the Stronghold boundary.
I use this method for all my terrain, as in some games the trees can be destroyed (to deny cover to the enemy), but for the most part it is simply a convenient way of transporting and storing an otherwise awkward terrain piece.

Hordes of the Things Fantasy Miniatures Game
HOTT is a great reminder of that make-your-own-fun, do-it-yourself ethic that many of us started gaming with.
HotT came after DBA so I can understand there would be improvement but why were not these rules then incorporated into the revised DBA.
Other improvements in HotT not taken to DBA 1.1 are elements shot at from the read, first turn to face the target and then recoil and that no element can attack a flank or rear on another unless it starts entirely on the flank or in the rear.

Hordes of the Things (2nd edition) is a set of rules for the Fantasy genre produced by Wargames Research Group and written by Richard Bodley Scott with a lot of input from the Hordes of the Things (HOTT) list on Yahoo.
Half the fun of HOTT is planning and designing armies to fit in with say the latest fantasy or sci-fi book you are reading.
Another great thing about HOTT is that an army can be created quite cheaply with a bit of imagination.

The Frog hordes and behemoths tore into the Pope's forces and aided by the remaining Imperial airboats and Frog flyer who moved to the rear of the line the Pope's army disintegrated under the hopping feet of the horrific Frogs with only a single paladin left alive.
This is not perfect in HOTT as the surviving units, as in this case, tend to be the nearly unstopable types and can really punish the victor in the later turns.

'Hordes of the Things' is a simple set of rules for fantasy wargames.
It is based on the DBA historical rules by Wargames Research Group but adds fantastical creatures, gods, magicians and heroes.
Elements are of basic types - examples are Knights (mounted troops relying on a fierce charge), Blades (skilled fencing infantry), Heroes (superhuman individuals), Lurkers (things that hide and ambush) and Magicians (practitioners of magic).

The HOTT rules system is extremely flexible and can be used to represent most of the nations and creatures encountered in Glorantha.
Gloranthan heroes fit neatly into the HOTT Hero category; and I personally play Harrek as a Paladin (not because of his innate goodness, but because of the magic resistance that Superheroes have in Dragon Pass).
The only category that I personally feel is missing from HOTT is the light troops; I'd love to see a category of Skirmishers to cater for Trollkin, Dragonewt Scouts, Ducks and their ilk (who I don't see as HOTT Shooters).

The effect of their attack may be that a bolt of lightning has been cast, the enemy troops have experienced fearful visions or that they have been infected with a plague of lice.

We might instead think of such goblins as a fantasy counterpart of the apocryphal northerner, clannish, rough spoken, given to the imbibing of strong but peculiar liquor, keeping analogues of whippets and pidgeons, prone to mob violence at away fixtures and perhaps too easily influenced by radical politicians of other races.
