Horites - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Horites (Egyptian Khar) were cave-dwellers mentioned in the Torah (Genesis 14:6, 36:20, Deuteronomy 2:12) inhabiting areas around Petra.
While in history Hurrians had close relations with so-called Hattians, biblical Horites are closely associated, through Seir's son Zibeon, with the Hivites.
It may be that rather than being a nation, the biblical term Hori may simply refer to a lifestyle common among Hivites which if a meaning is derived from their name makes them a "cave-dwelling" people -Troglodytes.

In the genealogy of the Horites (Gen. xxxvi.) several animal names occur, such as Shobal (the young lion), Zibeon (the hyena), Anah (the wild ass), Dishan (the gazel), Akan (the roe), Aiah (the kite), Aran (the ass), and Cheran (the lamb).
The occurrence of such a large number of animal names in one set of clan names suggests the possibility that the Horites, who were nomads, were organized on the totem-clan system.
Smith deduces the existence of such clans among the Horites from the mention of Anah clans and Dishan clans in the list.

The Hebrew word for Horites corresponds to the extrabiblical Hurrians, a non-Semitic people who migrated into the Fertile Crescent about 2000 B.C. The Hurrians created the Mitannian Empire in Mesopotamia about 1500 B.C. and later became an important element in the Canaanite population of Palestine.
The Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament), however, substitutes Horites for Hivites in Genesis 34:2 and Joshua 9:7.
Also, Zibeon, son of Seir the Horite (Genesis 36:20), is identified as a Hivite in Genesis 36:2.

 Spiritual Meaning of GENESIS 14:6
"The Horites in their Mount Seir," signifies the persuasions of falsity that are from the love of self; "even to El-paran, which is over in the wilderness," signifies their extension.
And as they who are in persuasions of falsity were represented by the Horites, and as at that time representatives came forth into actual realization, therefore the driving out of the Horites from Mount Seir by the descendants of Esau had a similar representation.
That this signifies their extension, may be seen from the fact that the Horites were smitten and were compelled to flee thus far.

Nabataea: Hyksos and Edom, Chapter Six, The Hyksos Horses
Horses the Horites had evidently seen, but not mules: so the advent of horses in that region can be pushed back at least a generation or two before the time of Anah.
As the Hittites and the Horites or "Hurri" as we noted before, were related peoples, it helps us in our theory to find the Bible, through this reference to "mules," indicating the presence of horses for the very first time in connection with the Horites, long before other peoples around had domestic horses.
However, we believe that it was the Horites of Seir who developed the use of the horse along with the Edomites, and that while the Hyksos peoples had many Horites in their composition the Edomites rather than Hittites were the leading faction.
