Horizon class frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Horizon Common New Generation Frigate (CNGF) is a multi-national collaboration to produce a new generation of anti-air warfare frigates.
In the period 1995-1996 significant arguments, changing requirements and technological problems led to the slippage of the in-service-date of the frigates to around 2006.
In 1999, with the overall programme in difficulties and the Horizon frigate itself effectively stalled, the UK announced that it was withdrawing from the CNGF project to pursue its own national design.

Project Horizon / Common New Generation Frigate (CNGF)
The Horizon frigate will also have anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities to conduct an extensive range of missions: air defence as part of an aircraft carrier group, support of lightly armed or unarmed vessels or operations as a single unit.
The Horizon frigate is predominantly an AAW vessel for zone defence and local defence against saturation missile attacks.
These frigates are being built as a cooperative effort between Italy and France to assure the protection of a convoy of vessels against high levels of threat, and massive attacks by anti-naval missiles.

Naval Technology - Horizon Class Anti-Air Warfare Frigates, France/Italy
The frigates are being built by Horizon SAS, a joint venture between Armaris (Thales and DCN) of France and Orrizonte Sistemi Navali (Fincantieri and Finmeccanica) of Italy.
The main missions of the Horizon frigate are to provide local area or extended cover against saturation missile attacks and to escort and protect carrier groups.
Horizon is equipped with a SLAT torpedo defence system which is also installed on the French and Italian aircraft carriers, the Charles de Gaulle and the Garibaldi.

Navy Matters | Type 45 Section
The Horizon Project was a troubled tri-nation collaboration for new air-defence frigate which begun in 1994 and finally cancelled in April 1999, writing off £75-200 million of the UK's investment in feasibility and assessment studies (depending how much "value" is counted as being reused by the Type 45).
The main mission of Horizon frigates is to provide air-defence escort for a carrier battle group led by a Charles de Gaulle type aircraft carrier, or for a group of unarmed or lightly-armed ships, such as an amphibious or a mine-hunting force.
The one criticism of the class was that they seemed under-armed for their size and cost, and so the Exocet missile system was installed on all ships after the first three, and those would be fitted with it at there mid-life refits (although Antelope was sunk during the Falklands conflict).

HMS Achilles (from 1941 HMNZS Achilles) was a Leander class cruiser of 7,200 tons built in Birkenhead, England and launched on 1 September 1932.
She was upgraded to Improved Leander class in 1936 and transferred to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy on 31 March 1937.
In the early morning of 13th December a force consisting of Achilles, HMS Ajax (22) and Exeter detected smoke on the horizon, which was confirmed to be a pocket battleship, thought to be German battleship Admiral Scheer, at 06:16.

While South Korea publicly assures its neighbors that this new class will be used for peacekeeping missions and humanitarian aid, this ship is potentially bad news for an enemy with a coastline and shifts the balance of naval power in the area, especially amid growing tensions with Japan and China.

 WHAT
The 'Godavari' and 'Brahmaputra' class frigates are primarily ASW vessels and even the Delhi class destroyers, (variants of Kashins with strong influence of Russian Sovremenneyy class destroyers), are primarily ASW vessels with distribution of armament somewhat similar to the US Spruance class destroyers.
The possible motive is perhaps to shift emphasis on sub-surface operations in the near and distant future to facilitate the operation and transition of friendly missile firing submarines like the ATV (Advanced Technology Vessel), acting as the nuclear deterrent capable of massive "second strike" retaliatory capability.
The Dutch 'Jacob Van Heemskerck' class is an AAW version of 'Kortenaer' class while French 'Cassard' class is the AAW version of Georges Leygues class destroyer/frigates.

A sixth ex-Netherlands frigate, the Kortenaer, was purchased in June, reactivated, and commissioned in mid-December as the Kontouriotis.
The other new class, whose design was derived from lessons in signature reduction learned in the construction and operation of the trials craft Smyge (now employed as a public relations and recruiting platform), has been a quartet of 200-ton inshore mine countermeasures craft.

The third submarine of the class, the Weller, was commissioned on 10 July; the fifth, the Sheean, was launched on 1 May, and the sixth and final submarine, the Rankin, is to be launched this May. The Sheean and the fourth submarine, the Dechaineux, are to be given an interim--but expensive--upgrade before entering active service.
The second and third 2,180-ton Jiangwei-II-class frigates, with the Chinese version of the French Crotale Modulaire point-defense surface-to-air missile system, were to have been completed during 1999, with the fifth to have launched and a sixth building.
Of the latter class, the Gelibolu (ex-USS Reid [FFG-30]) was transferred on 1 January 1999, the Gökçeada (ex-USS Mahlon S. Tisdale, [FFG-27]) arrived in Turkey on 27 September, and the USS John A. Moore (FFG-19) is to be transferred this year to complete a sextet of the class in Turkish service.

The 'Godavari' class frigates are primarily ASW vessels and even the Delhi class destroyers, although "stretched" variants of Kashins in Indian Navy service, are primarily ASW vessels with distribution of armaments similar to United States Spruance class destroyers.
The latest class of submarines, the Russian Kilos, the German Type 1500 and the projected Franco-Spanish Scorpenes are all SSKs (Submarine, conventional powered hunter-killer).
However considering the emerging sophistication of future generations of nuclear submarines it may be logical to opt for destroyer sized vessels similar to Japanese 'Haruna' and improved 'Shirane' class, with the aft flight deck extending to one-third of the length of the ship.

The ship is obviously derived from the Spruance class vessels, the main difference being the mounting of two twin-arm launchers for SAMs, as opposed to the ASW equipment of the Spruances.

 Sheffield Class Type 42 Destroyers
The principle role of the Sheffield Class Type 42 destroyers is to provide area air defence for a task force and since their introduction into service they have constituted the fleet's principle anti-air warfare capability.

The four batch 3 ships- often referred to as the 'Manchester Class'- are some seven metres longer than the rest of the class and hence are known as 'stretched'.
