Horizons is the sequel to the Carrousel of Progress, and opened at Epcot on the 1st October 1982.
Within Horizons the guest is taken on a journey from the Science Fiction of the recent past through the eyes of authors like Jules Verne in the 1920s, then on to the SciFi comic books of the 1930s and the start of the TV era in the 1950s, with the futuristic Popular Mechanics magazine articles.
Disney continued to operate the attraction until it was closed in late 1994.

Horizons ride vehicles have been spotted by greggeorge@att.net on a flatbed truck leaving WDW - possibly to an offsite storage area.
Despite rumors that the horizons building has become unstable, we now have word that a portion of the building may remain, and be extended.
Disney is aggressively attempting to save the building, although there is a appearing to be a strong possibility that they will have no choice but to tear the building down and start over again.

Horizons had it all, from artful and humorous portrayals of our ancestors' dreams of the future to futuristic concepts, and loads of special effects.
Horizons was probably the most appropriate attraction for Future World, giving us one of the most intelligent peeks into living in the centuries to come.
Horizons lacked a sponsor for several years and Disney Company seems to have been the only entity that thought Horizon's view of the future was too old so they replaced it with Chevys.

The now extinct Epcot attraction Horizons was originally to be named Century 3 (or Century III), to recognize the third century of American existence (1976-2076).
In the end, the Futureprobe name was scrapped and after much debate, General Electric (the attraction's sponsor) and Disney officials settled on the name Horizons.
Capturing the tradition of Angel baseball and a contemporary "back to basics" flare, the new logo features the signature halo surrounding the "A" while the uniforms are reminiscent of decades past.

I only visited Horizons a handful of times, during a visit in 1984, about 6 months after her opening, and then not again until 1998, not long before she closed.
Many thanks to the Imagineers and other Disney and GE employees who put their hearts and souls, and probably several years of their lives, into conceiving, designing and building Horizons.
Horizons will continue to live on in the spirits of those dreamers and doers who believe in the message started by Walt Disney and brought to life by the Imagineers who built Horizons.

The replacement for Horizons, a space themed pavilion sponsored by Intel, will be somewhat similar to The Living Seas in that guests will go on a ride (a real ride, not a simulated ride) that will transport them to a space station where they can explore.
Disney World fans have been salivating over this possibility as it means the Matterhorn may finally appear at Walt Disney World.
Horizons also featured one of the best film sequences of a NASA Space Shuttle lift off--the film was so much better than anything NASA had ever filmed that NASA requested a copy.

Feeling that Horizons was simply no longer futuristic, the Imagineers at Disney have decided to convert the pavilion (actually, demolish and start over) into an attraction about space that will outdo all other Disney attractions' technologies.
