A better suggestion is that implied in a book published in 1975, World of Wonders by the Canadian author Robertson Davies, which describes a tour of rural Canada by an English theatrical company in the 1930s: “Horlicks was a word she used a lot; it suggested ballocks but avoided a direct indecency...

The only Horlicks I ever knew in my childhood were the candy tablets, which stuck to your mouth and gums for days and were wonderful.
My mum is a confirmed Horlicks addict, having grown up on the stuff, so I have sent her Nigella's Horlicks pudding recipe, thus likely earning me a number of brownie points, thank you tellurian.
