Hormuzd Rassam (1826-1910), Assyrian explorer, was born at Mosul in 1826.
Hormuzd won Layard's fullest confidence and when Layard went to Bagdad to arrange for the transport of the antiquities to England, Hormuzd was left in charge, and all the accounts of the excavations passed through his hands.
Rassam, whose personal relations with Theodore were not unnameable, succeeded in communicating with the frontier, and a military expedition was despatched to Abyssinia to effect the release of the captives, under Sir Robert Napier (afterwards Lord Napier of Magdala).

Queen Victoria's special envoy Hirmuzd Rassam, who does not appear to have believed Speedy's story about the alleged incident on board H.M.S. Feroze, was not content to leave the matter at that.
Rassam, it will be seen, delicately refrains from any comment on Speedy's story about what is supposed to have happened on H.M.S. Feroze.
Rassam's later argument is supported by what he says in his memoirs about Speedy.

It is also very difficult to say wether we are dealing with the question of trust and confidence trickesters, unless we go back to the root of the matter why Tewodros trusted the people who pushed him to sucide for the upbringing of his son.
I also found it extremely difficult to understand the captain’s and the envoy’s concern for the little prince and their burning desire to transport him.

George Smith worked there in 1874-5 and Hormuzd Rassam returned there from 1878-82, both for the British Museum.
When Max Mallowan led the British return to the site, attention was directed both to re-excavating Layard's finds and to extending the excavation into the untouched areas of the Palace.
The actual results of the British campaigns were not only the further excavation of Palace wings, especially the private rooms that had not been touched by Layard or Rassam and did not have stone wall bas-relief decoration, but also the restoration of the bas-relief decoration of the re-excavated portions of the Palace.
