If there were no such thing as the Horn, what would you play?
An instrument with plenty of challenge, classified as a target for melody most of the time.
If there were no such thing as the horn, I would probably still be playing the flute (which I still love - one of the hardest things about taking up the horn was that I didn't have time to do both so i had to let my flute playing slide a bit).
I switched because the horn was more unique, and it caught my interest...So that is probably what I would play if there were no horns.

We believe that horns play the best when they are made by hand and that many modern techniques used today are an attempt to duplicate that which is inherent in a manual manufacturing process.
In asking the question: "What is the best horn you ever played?" You get many answers, however there are a few names which are often repeated and held in such high regard that one might consider this them to be from the golden age of horn making.
On natural horn, I currently perform with the LA Baroque orchestra, Musica Angelica, Pacific Classical Winds, and have performed with at the Mozart Festival in San Luis Obispo, and at the 1997 IHS symposium.

The Horn Players' FAQ, V 0.58
Most modern horns are known as "double" horns - not because there are two of them, but because they are equipped with a "trigger" valve (usually at the thumb) which changes the pitch of the instrument from F to Bb.
A descant horn is a smaller horn (a smaller diameter, and shorter length), usually pitched in F alto, that has a brighter sound and which facilitate playing in the upper register, much as a piccolo trumpet compared to normal trumpets.
The horn player of that era had to be a master of stopping and hand muting, and could produce notes outside the normal harmonic range by changing the key of the instrument.

 Instrument Jokes
The organ is the instrument of worship for in its sounding we sense the Majesty of God and in its ending we know the Grace of God.
It had been decided that during this performance, once the bass players had played their parts in the opening of the symphony, they were to quietly lay down their instruments and leave the stage, rather than sit on thier stools looking and feeling dumb for twenty minutes.
What notes this instrument is called upon to play could, subject to a satisfactory demarcation conference with the Musician's Union, be shared out equitably amongst the other instruments.

The fact that the horn in the Edinborough collection has five valves doesn't settle the question whether it's a double bell: Courtois and Couneson have produced six-valve single bell euphoniums.
The companies in question are making period brass, so I think what they're doing is modelling their horns on popular examples from the past.
Since double bell instruments are so popular, I wonder why some manufacturer does not make a small series.
