The island is culturally distinctive as it was the site of a large immigration of American draft dodgers during the Vietnam War, and many of these people still live on the island.
The island is geographically distinctive as it was formed by post-glacial rebound with the retreat of the last ice age.

HORNBY ISLAND, British Columbia (AP) - Provincial wildlife officials are concerned by the expanding Virginia opossum population on this island in the Strait of Georgia.
Two of the cat-sized marsupials arrived on the island, about 80 miles northwest of Vancouver, a few decades ago.
The government is considering hiring an island resident to check opossum traps regularly and take any live animals to a veterinarian to be humanely killed.
