Hornby Railways - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hornby Railways is the leading brand of model railway in the United Kingdom, and its company roots date back to 1901, when founder Frank Hornby received a patent for his Meccano construction toy.
Hornby, then known as Meccano Ltd, released its first train, a clockwork O gauge model, in 1920.
By 1976 Hornby was facing challenges from Palitoy and Airfix both of whom were producing high quality detailed models.

The name “Hornby” has been associated with model railways for many decades, from O gauge tinplate in the 1940’s through the three-rail Hornby Dublo range in the 50’s, its incarnation as “Triang Hornby” in the 60,s, the firm has always been the UK’s first choice when it came to OO gauge model railways.
Hornby have produced three variants, GW green with a 3000 gallon tender and the “shirt button” roundel, BR unlined fl with a 3500 gallon tender and the early “cycling lion” totem and a BR green example with a 4000 gallon tender and late totem.
Hornby’s example is unrecognisable compared to their old effort (now, thankfully, consigned to the “Thomas” range!) and is fitted with opening cab doors, a sliding roof vent, a full cab interior and masses of neat detail such as sand-pipes, air pipes and lamp brackets.

Hornby, dating from 1988, this is a 64-page Catalogue from Hornby, which was their 34th edition. Thomas the Tank Engine makes an appearance in this catalogue. It's an unmarked example and is generally tidy - and the covers are reasonably crisp. I would grade it all as B, possibly B+.
Hornby Railways, 23rd Edition Catalogue from 1977, with 64 pages. Unmarked and generally clean, both covers and the inside pages. But there is a tear to the front cover, unfortunately, about 10cms long by 2cms. Condition is B to B+.
Hornby, 29th Edition 1983 Catalogue, comprising 56 pages in colour. This is a nice tidy example, unmarked apart from a crease to the front cover, which is the only blemish. Overall, I would grade it as B to B+.

Hornby is a household name and is now famous as the UK brand leader in the field of Model Railways.
The name originates from Frank Hornby (1863-1936) who invented the Meccano construction toys, and in 1901 formed a company called Meccano Ltd. In 1920 this company developed the first Hornby train which was produced in metal and powered by clockwork.
In 1964 the model railway manufacturers were experiencing a severe recession, and this led to the take over of Meccano Ltd by Lines Bros Ltd. Lines Bros then merged their own Tri-ang Railways and the Meccano Hornby range and it was renamed Tri-ang Hornby.
