Hornchurch had no runways as such, but a large open grass airfield, which allowed for three runs of 1,200, 850, and 830 yards.
Hornchurch soon gained a satellite airfield at Rochford and, in November 1939 another at Manston; both airfields were controlled from Hornchurch.

This was followed by a questions and answers session during which questions were raised such as how high and fast could these craft travel and whether there are any restrictions concerning their launch point position and flight path.
The questions came thick and fast which never posed a problem for Peter as he clearly knew his stuff and was able to use part of his rocket collection to demonstrate his answers to some of the more technical questions that were raised.

The main raid of the day was just after 0930hrs by Do17's and Me110's, which successfully bombed the airfield at North Weald, causing considerable damage, along with attacks on the airfields at Debden and Hornchurch.
It was not until mid-afternoon that another raid appeared on the radar and by 1600hrs it was realised that the biggest raid yet of the conflict was heading towards the Kent coast.
As the Do17's dropped their bombs on the Kingston and Surbiton areas of Surrey, the He111's had made for the airfield at Farnborough while the Ju88's were on course for the Biggin Hill and Kenley areas.

On Friday, the 16th of August 1941 150 German aircraft crossed over the Kent skies, to deal the worst blow to civilian life the county had experienced to that point in the war.
With the formation splitting into groups to be variously challenged from Manston, Kenly, Hornchurch Biggin Hill and Hawkinge airfields, a group of Dorniers made it to Northfleet at a little after mid day.
It was reported that about 106 high explosive bombs ranging from 50-250 kilos were dropped over the town and its industrial complex.
