The Viking Horned Helmet: Myth or Legend   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
He suggests such horned helmets were ceremonial in nature, and that the horns were used as symbols of the virility of the bull.
Oakeshott (15) notes that though the helmets are basically Roman in configuration, the use of horns and the wheel as embellishments represents an application of barbaric and mystical symbols.
Shetelig and Falk (17) state that a hood could be placed over the helmet to hide either the presence of the war-mark, the presence of the highly decorated helmet of a chieftain, or simply the presence of the helmet itself.

Thracian Armour - Helmets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Most helmets were bronze; but at least one fifth or fourth century grave held the remains of an iron helmet, unfortunately too decayed for reconstruction, while another contained a leather helmet of which all that remained were bronze cheek and neck guards, and elaborate appliques decorated with palmettes and spirals.
Such helmets when used in Greece and Macedon were often crested and sometimes had extra crests or feathers as side-ornaments, but the actual Thracian examples I have seen seem to have no trace of fittings for a crest.
Cheek pieces were of iron, according to the catalogue of the exhibition in which the helmet appeared, though the rest of it is bronze; presumably fragments remained to enable this conclusion to be reached.

Horned God - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The idea that all such horned images were of deities and that they represented manifestations of a single Horned God, and that Christianity had attempted to suppress his worship by associating him with Satan, developed in the fashionable 19th-century Occultist circles of England and France.
The horn is also seen as a symbol of fruitfulness and bounty, as in the Horn of Plenty.
The depiction of Satan as a horned and hoofed goat-like monster holding a trident is a 19th century invention, probably becoming popular as a response of Christian morality to the growing popularity of the Greek god Pan in the art and literature of the time.
