Art within the school environment was regarded as a 'lesser' subject as the overall ethos was that of a watered down public school.
At the same time the early buds of 'post-modernism' were shooting up in the art colleges and older traditional (and expensive) methods such as printmaking and life-drawing were losing their place in the art school curriculum to 'new' media and fashions.
In a pre-internet age computer art, video, installation and performance were all making inroads especially as this seemed to mirror 'important' transatlantic developments in the arts and 'provincial' UK could not be left behind in the race for international avant-garde status.

For a few years the the Fine Art course was situated within Alexandra Palace until a fire in the early 1980s led to it's relocation to Quicksilver Place in Wood Green and development of it's own specialised library.

Take a seat for art, again from Guardian Unlimited: Culture Vulture
Initially they were protesting about issues within Hornsey itself, but the event soon gathered pace: the students announced that they had taken over the college in order to implement a “new educational structure”, changing the curriculum and issuing a constant stream of papers criticising contemporary government policy.
Inspired by the fact that the old art school buildings have recently become free, a gala reunion is being planned later this month for everyone who attended the original protests - students, teachers and other supporters - as well as current art students.
The Hornsey protests in 1968 was the reason I applied and was admitted to that college in 1970.
