  Horny Toad Road
Horny Toads aren't toads at all but rather horned lizards but they will be affectionaly called "horny toads" in the confines of this gallery.
In selling of horny toads to northern humans in the 1950s, human population pressures, agrabusiness, increasing use of pesticides and the invasion of fire ants in the southern US has eliminated horny toads in much of the south.
I believe the horny toads were forced along the forward edge of the fire ants in a search for their food source, the big red ant, and survival.

The horny toad resorts to this scare tactic when it is trapped or afraid, forcing its blood pressure to rise so rapidly that the cavities in its head fill up and burst at the corners of its eyes, spraying whatever is scaring it with blood.
Unfortunately, the horny toad's appeal is in part responsible for the decline in its numbers.

Whatever Happened to the Horny Toads?
The horny toad is not really a toad at all, but rather a horned lizard.
When horny toads were more plentiful, they were often captured and sold or kept as pets, although they don't do well in captivity.
So there is no firm answer to "whatever happened to the horny toads?" However, as sentinels of the environment, they are a good example of unintended consequences of our actions, and a reminder to consider the larger implications of the things we do.

Once an almost ubiquitous part of the Texas landscape and psyche, the horny toad, as they are most commonly called, has been mighty hard to find for a long time.
