Horology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Horology is the study of the science and art of timekeeping devices.
Horology has a long history and there are many museums and several specialised libraries devoted to the subject.
An example is the Royal Greenwich Observatory, which is also the source of the Prime Meridian (longitude 0° 0' 0"), and the home of the first marine timekeepers accurate enough to determine longitude (made by John Harrison).

Mike Rundle: That New Obsession, Horology
Usually people say they don't want to reinvent the wheel, but in horology, reinventing the wheel by engineering and designing new escapements is what keeps the science of watchmaking exciting.
Different watch escapements basically do the same thing, but in extremely different and interesting ways, and it is these diverse ways of doing the same thing (transferring stored energy into gears turning) that make mechanical movements so very expensive and intricate.
Horology is not about the jewelry aspect of watches but rather the engineering and science that goes into making them, however the material of the watch obviously makes it more expensive.

That the market existed was fortunate, for portable watches proved much more challenging to mechanical ingenuity than clocks, and hence were a substantial additional source of Western skills in the mechanical arts.
Horology was thus a jeweler's or astronomer's art, with one exception: the marine chronometer.
Until nearly the end of the eighteenth century, navigators had no reliable or accurate way to find a ship's longitude, and as a result many lives, ships, and cargoes were lost in strandings on shores and reefs that had been thought to be many miles distant.

Paragon & Prodigal: Aspects of Janus in Genevan Horology [4/15/01] - TimeZone
While there will always be some difference between the degree of craft put into watches at the high horology vs. commercial horology levels, it is the relatively narrow difference at Patek Philippe which allows it to set the standard not only in terms of its best trademark complications, but for simple watches as well.
While all of this clearly portrays a paragon of Genevan horology, it is not the sum of Patek Philippe -- the manufacture did not emerge unchanged from the Dark Quartz Age.
We have seen the two sides of Genevan horology: One ever looking back to tradition, pursuing refinement and an almost platonic idealism of classical forms and the old opulence of the baroque.
