On my trip with my kids I was planning on seeing the Horse Guards, either the changing of the horse guards or the dismount (or at least see them stationed if we cannot time the others!).
What I would do is use the Charing Cross tube station, walk down Whitehall to Horse Guards, watch the change, walk across Horse Grards Parade to St James Park and stop at the cafe in the park for a snack or lunch, then walk through the park to see Buckingham Palace.
My kids want to see the changing of the guard, and I have heard that the horse guards are more interesting to watch than the Buckingham Palace Changing of the guard.
