Horse racing was their sport, horse trading their delight, and horse breeding, but a slight necessity, was in some respects their challenge.
Paint Horses, whose ancestors a few generations back were applauded for their good performing ability in conveying the message of the wild-west Shows, were now cheered for bucking or cutting skills that brought to the arena a true frontier background.

Sand Colic, Prevention and Treatment in Horses
Sand accumulation can at times be diagnosed and there are four methods for this diagnosis, two of which are not conclusive and two of which are.
If some amount of sand is detected in the feces, it could be that the rate of ingestion and the rate of sand passage is equal and the horse is not accumulating any appreciable amount within the colon.
This can occur if the sand load is not moving either because the sand has impaired motility of the colon itself, or the normal motility within the colon does not have the force to move the sand and thus create the sound.

Because the Fort Lewis properties are centrally located in Horse Gulch, our decisions about the kinds of development we allow, and the kinds of access we provide (or do not provide), will either facilitate or constrain development of other private lands within the area.
Secondly, although private development of FLC properties in Horse Gulch would produce some short-term economic benefits for some people in the community, we believe that the long-term interests of the greatest number of Durango residents would be best served by preserving the natural qualities of the Horse Gulch area.
The axis of upper Horse Gulch is formed by the more easily eroded Menefee Formation, the interbedded siltstones and sandstones of the Cliff House Sandstone, and, on the eastern side of the valley, the off-shore marine deposits of the Lewis Shale.
