Loaches are freshwater fish of the family Cobitidae, small benthic (bottom-dwelling) fish with a flattened ventral profile.
Loaches are mostly scavengers and are omnivorous, usually not very picky about their food.
Because of their scavenging nature and their ability to adapt to many freshwater ecosystems, some loaches have been introduced to waters in regions which they are not native to and may pose problems to local wildlife as an invasive species.

Loaches are all essentially opportunistic predators, feeding primarily on infaunal invertebrates such as worms, crustaceans, insect larvae, and snails.
Loaches are peculiarly sensitive to whitespot, particularly when stressed by poor water quality, insufficient oxygen levels, or by being kept in too-small a group.

Loaches, being in the main part, bottomdwellers will appreciate a soft, sandy (or small pebbles) substrate that they can dig around in to their hearts content.
Loaches will almost always require places to go and hide if startled – therefore provide plenty of nooks and crannies, twisted piles of bogwood, caves, etc. It may sound unusual, but the higher the number of boltholes your loaches have, the more likely you are to see them.
Loaches can often be found playing in the outflow of the filter, taking turns to dance "upstream" in the fast moving water.
