Heavy Horses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heavy Horses is an album released by Jethro Tull on April 10, 1978 (see 1978 in music).
It is one of the last albums which saw the acoustic-celtic-rock flavor of much of Jethro Tull's middle music, before becoming synthesizer heavy.
The album continued the folk sound of Songs From The Wood but abandons much of the folk lyrical content in exchange for a more realist perspective on the changing world.

All The Pretty Horses (Soundtrack) - Album Reviews
All the Pretty Horses is an evocative, haunting celebration of the music of the American west, filled with the familiar strains of acoustic guitars, mandolins, accordions, and lush strings, but given a fresh spin by Stuart's new approach to their use.
Low strumming opens the album before a subtle mix of lead and rhythm guitars and string arrangements works as a brief taster of the cowboy aspirations that are about to follow.
One of the purposes of the soundtrack album is to act as a souvenir of the film, a record of an experience the moviegoer enjoyed, it is to be hoped.

albumvote reviews of Horses by Patti Smith
Recorded and released in 1975, Horses, with its blend of frenetic guitars and “in touch” lyrics provided by the beatnik poetess, the album can only be described as one of the best of its generation.
This debut album was a long time coming for Patti and she made the most of the opportunity.
On her later albums, some of her lengthy poetic excursions did not always work well, but on this album "Birdland" and "Land" are shimmering, fantastical dreams of spirituality and sexuality.

"Horses," the first album to emerge from the CBGB class of '75, is full of gestures toward transcendence -- visionary riffs involving everything from love and money through burning bats and death by drowning; and the music itself, a swirling, driving assemblage anchored not by garage guitar but by Sohl's delicate piano.
To the public and to most critics, it was a comedown from the Top 50 "Horses"; she was castigated for slipping into plain hard rock on the one hand and impenetrable abstraction on the other.
But this is the one Patti Smith album on which the band sounds like her worthy foil, with enough production bite behind it to challenge Smith's elastic voice.

JohnK's Tull Reviews: A Tull for the '70s, Part II
What made the album fascinating was that it was released with a comic strip on the inside of the album that illustrates the story of Ray Lomas, and ties the various songs on the album to one another.
The title of the album was a reference to the heavy working horses, a dying breed with the advent of technology, and the album is somewhat more dark, more menacing in tone, although it does have its light moments and there is a sense of hope on the record as well.
The album portrays Tull as a terrific live act, and if the banter on the album of Ian Anderson on stage, both with the audience and the band members, is any indication of these concerts, the atmosphere must have been absolutely wonderful.

In 1986, when the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), one of the largest horse groups in the world, celebrated their Fiftieth Anniversary, Murphey was chosen to be a spokesperson for the organization.
Riding horses also played a part in Murphey's appearance on a nationally-syndicated television show when he had a guest-starring role (that he created) with "Lonesome Dove: The Series" in which he played a guitar-playing, singing cowboy and Pinkerton detective.
Now, of course, cowboys and horses are intrinsically linked, and are both a big part of the Western experience representing much of what is best about the culture of the West -- wide open spaces, personal freedom, hard work and a closeness to nature.

It is only logical, then, that Murphey would put out an album of songs dedicated to the horse.
During the year that the AQHA had exclusive rights to the album (called ''America's Horses'' in the AQHA version), Murphey learned that there was wider demand for the package.

Cavemen painted horses on cave walls, the Pegasus was a part of Greek mythology, the tales of 'A Thousand and One Nights' and the Knights of the Round Table both included horses, and every great emperor or military hero tended to have a horse associated with him."
An album of Western outlaw music wouldn’t be complete without a song by the late Marty Robbins, and Cowboy Songs III - Rhymes of the Renegades allowed Murphey the opportunity to realize a dream of a lifetime.
It was three years and three albums later that Murphey established himself as a major hitmaker with the Top 10 smash “Wildfire” and the follow-up hit, “Carolina in the Pines.” Within years, he also validated his country credentials with such hits as “Cherokee Fiddle” and “A Mansion on the Hill.”

The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band: Horses in the Sky: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
These are dispiriting times for political progressives in North America, but on much of Horses in the Sky, Efrim Menuck and his ragtag troupe of patriots sound uncommonly pissy and defeated.
The fourth album created under the various Mt. Zion banners, Horses finds the group expanding upon their established crescendo-laden orchestral formulae in a heady, almost reckless fashion, as though they're determined to rally themselves from sociopolitical despondency through sheer force of musical will.
Despite the strengths of these tracks, in other spots the album's lyrics devolve out of sheer ineffectual frustration, as on the extended anti-government rant "Teddy Roosevelt's Guns".
