Given the longevity of the Horta, and the fact that Janus VI was a prosperous mining colony for the Federation, it is likely to assume that humans have been in contact with the Horta since their existance became known.
In ST:O, almost 250 years later, one could assume that relations with the Horta would still exist, possibly even new "colonies" of Horta could be introduced to other suitable worlds for them to live on.

I find this somewhat distancing; it establishes that the Horta is intelligent and articulate but to me it doesn't convey the raw passion of a mother who has lost many of her children to brutality and killed the attackers out of grief.
