  Horten Ho 229 V3
The Horten IX design became the Horten Ho 229 aircraft program after Göring granted the project official status in 1943 and the technical office of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium assigned to it the design number 229.
Horten was the technical officer for Jadgeschwader (fighter squadron) 26 stationed in France.
Horten mounted elevons (control surfaces that combined the actions of elevators and ailerons) to the trailing edge and spoilers at the wingtips for controlling pitch and roll, and he installed drag rudders next to the spoilers to help control the wing about the yaw axis.

Horten Ho 229 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Horten Ho-IX (often erroneously called Gotha Go 229 or Ho 229 due to the identity of the chosen manufacturer of the aircraft) was a late-World War II prototype flying wing fighter/bomber, designed by Reimar and Walter Horten and built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik.
In the early 1930s, the Horten brothers had become interested in the flying wing design as a method of improving the performance of gliders.
The Ho 229 was captured by U.S. VIII Corps of General Patton's Third Army.

 Horten Ho 229 Information
The Government Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium) approved the Horten proposal but ordered the addition of two 30 mm cannon, as they felt the aircraft would also be useful as a fighter due to its estimated top speed being significantly higher than that of any Allied aircraft.
A Horten glider and the Ho 229 V3, which was undergoing final assembly, were secured and sent to Northrop Corporation in the United States for evaluation.
Whether this was done for reasons of stealth or simply because late-war Germany experienced shortages of metals and Hortens needed to reinforce the plywood for trans-sonic flight is a matter of largely unreferenced debate and speculation.

The fate of the Ho 229 V2's test pilot, Erwin Ziller, was sealed when a flame-out occurred on February 26, 1945, during the landing approach of his fourth flight.
The Ho 229 V3, which was under construction at the end of the war, was also seized, and was subsequently shipped to the USA for evaluation.

 Gotha Go 229 History
The Horten brothers designed several flying wing prototypes since the 1930s, the Go229 was their only design that was close of entering the military service at the end of WW2.
In 1943, the construction of the twin-jet-powered flying wing prototype Horten Ho IX V2 began.
The Ho 229 was made of wood, since wood was not a "strategic" material and this would decrease the weight of the plane.

Horten Ho 229 by Toby Nelson (Dragon 1/48)
By 1945, the Hortens had gone through several flying wing gliders and Gotha received a contract to produce a turbojet-powered version of Hortens' design.
The first flight of the Ho 229 V2 was on February 2, 1945.
The obvious choice was a flying wing--I pointed out the Ho 229 design to my friends, and we used that as the "inspiration" for our design (in the same way that the Soviets used our Space Shuttle as the "inspiration" for theirs).

The Hortens felt that the low-drag all-wing design could meet all of the goals – by reducing the drag, cruise power could be lowered to the point where the range requirement could be met.

The Horton Ho 229, effectively one of the Luftwaffe’s legendary secret projects or so-called wonder weapons, was one of the most enigmatic aircraft designs to emerge from World War II.
The Ho 229 was planned as the first of the next generation of German jet fighters to follow the Messerschmitt Me 262.
The aircraft commenced flight-testing in December 1944, and it was planned to re- equip the Me163-equipped JG400 with the Ho 229 later in the war.

Flying Wings : An Anthology : Reimar and Walter Horten
Almost unknown today, the allwing twin-jet Go 229 was probably the most startling and unconventional warplane built during the WW2.
It stemmed from the belief of the brothers Walter and Reimar Horten that a flying wing was the most efficient form of heavier than-air flying machine.
The HO IX V1 was to fly as glider, subsequently being modified to install two BMW 003 A turbojets.

The Ho IX was what was later to be known colloquially as a "skunked" project --- it went forward initially without the support (or even the knowledge) of the all-powerful Reichluftfahrtministerium (RLM, the State Ministry of Aviation).
The Horten brothers planned that their Ho IX V1 was to undergo an extensive series of gliding tests before any attempt was to be made to install the pair of BMW 003 turbojets.
The planned installation of the BMW 003 turbojet engines in the Ho IX V1 prototype was deemed impractical, and it was decided to install a pair of Jumo 004 engines in the second prototype (Ho IX V2).

 Horten Ho 229/Go 229 - Fronta.cz

Walter and Reimar Horten were pioneers of the tailless all-wing aircraft, and built a succession of beautifully graceful sailplanes with outstanding performance in 1936-40, followed by examples with two pusher engines.
Four more machines, Go 229 V4, V5, V6 and V7 were in various stages of completion, the V4 and V5 being two-seater prototypes of the projected night-fighter version.

Hünerjäger, proposed an alternate all-wing design to the RLM in January 1945 which used many of the construction techniques as the Horten aircraft but had the advantage of being able to be modified with new equipment and engines without changing the flying characteristics greatly.
