Horton was the scene of the final inglorious act in the story of Monmouth's flight after the battle of Sedgemoor, when a searching militiaman spotted a tattered cloak in a ditch and found the Duke disguised as a shepherd.
Horton church is a quaint Georgian building, built on the site of the old Priory which was founded there in 961.
Taylor's 1765 map of Dorset describes it as an 'Observatory', but according to one local legend it was built by Sturt as a viewing platform from which to watch the local hunt when too old to ride to hounds.

Horton folly tower is hard to miss sat high on a hill, and the 140 foot tall structure will be seen on the horizon at some stage, irrespective of what direction you approach it from.
This is one of my favourites, being a beautifully designed tower that was built by a Humphrey Sturt early in the 1700`s.

In the records of John-13, it is shown that he and his father, also named John, were of Blandford and Horton.
In the notes to John-15 of Steepleton, it is shown that his first son was born c1460 and his second son c1465.
From Hutchins History of Dorset, John and Joan were married before 1519, as at this time they acquired the manor of Littleton near Mapouder; it is estimated that their son John was born between 1500 and 1520 (see John-13), so they were probably married between these dates.

"Horton Tower" - Horton Tower itself is real and can be found on a hilltop close to Horton village just north of Wimborne in Dorset.
Horton Tower will be familiar to many as the location for the cock-fighting scene in the 1966 film of Thomas Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd".
There is a legend of a "Grey Lady" at nearby Horton Hollow and I so used this wonderful backdrop to weave a story about lovers who, through injustice, became separated - yet they believed that somehow the Grey Lady could re-unite them again.

By 1540 he was at Horton, about 10 miles from Blandford, farming land formerly belonging to Horton Priory and was listed as an archer there in a Tudor muster roll at this time.
The 1623 Visitation of Dorset also states that he was “of Horton”, and a number of documents dating from the first half of the 16C refer to John Daccom of Horton or of Blandford Forum distant 10 miles from Horton.
As discussed above, John married Johanna or Jane around 1530 and according to document L she was a “gentlewoman of great wealth and allegiance in Dorset” and receiving rent for the “Red Lion” in Blandford.

The Tower nestles in the corner between the Porch and the Nave and appears to be based on plans drawn up by Sir John Vanburgh, the famous 18th century architect, for Eastbury House at Tarrant Gunville.
Whether Sir John was involved in the design of Horton Church tower, or whether the plans were "borrowed", history does not relate.

She married my ancestor Thomas Hart on 10 Feb 1766 in Horton and lived there for the rest of her life.
Jane's family were yeoman farmers, and various members of her famlily lived at Long Crichel (her father John d.1817 and later her siblings Henry d.1849 and Mary d.1832).
