  SETTLE & CARLISLE RAILWAY - HELWITH BRIDGE to HORTON in RIBBLESDALE
The horn sounds for the foot crossing and the former siding into Horton Quarry is on our left as we approach the delightful station of Horton in Ribblesdale.
To the south of Horton station on the down side of the line were the sidings to "Delaney's Works" which later became part of "Settle Limes Ltd" and now known as Horton Quarry.
Horton lies on the Pennine Way and is the starting point for many walkers and ramblers for the ascent of Penyghent.

Leave the car park in the centre of Horton by the metalled path at the toilet end of the car park, and proceed a few yards further over the wooden footbridge.
Over to the left is Horton Quarry, which is continually changing the landscape whilst excavating the limestone.
The sign indicates that to the left is a bridleway top Clapham 2 3/4 miles, Selside to the right 1 3/4 miles, Horton is back in the direction the path has come from 1 1/2 miles and Ingleborough straight on up the hill 2 3/4 miles.

The walk starts in the village of Horton in Ribblesdale well known for its association with the Yorkshire "Big Three".
From the main car park (grid ref. 807726) walk south along the main road towards the stone-built Norman Parish Church from where there is a good view of the main objective of this walk.
Also of note is the view of Ribblesdale to the west and less-known Silverdale to the east.

The road was followed past the buildings at Rainscar and to a parking area and the track to Penyghent.
The café is the local information centre and holds the record book for the Three Peaks walk (24 hours to conquer Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent all about 700 metres high) as well as a log book for the Pennine Way.
There is plenty to occupy a summer evening including walking south for less than 500 metres to Horton Bridge with its interesting church (and another pub).

A wooden gate is soon passed through just to the right of a metal gate, and the walled lane is followed straight ahead, ignoring the lane that goes off to the right.
This walled rough lane is then followed for a further 1 1/2 miles until a wooden gate is reached and the path passes out onto Horton Moor and becomes grassy underfoot.
Walk down hill away from the station to join the B6479 Horton to Ribblehead road and continue straight ahead in the same direction, heading back for the centre of Horton-In-Ribblesdale.
