Horyuji stands in a bright pastoral landscape to the southwest of the town of Nara.
Horyuji is firmly on the route of school tours and I want to see its beautiful statues before the crowds engulf the temple with their noise.
Horyuji was only the second full temple compound to be established in Japan, after the temple now known as Asukadera set up by Soga no Umako in 588 and built by artisans from the Korean state of Paekche.

Horyuji's history begins in 587 AD, when the ailing Emperor Yomei ordered the construction a Buddhist temple, probably to cure his illness.
One also marvels that although Horyuji is from the very beginnings of written Japanese history, the buildings already show a highly refined level of style.
The most notable of the later buildings is the Dream Hall of Prince Shotoku, an octagonal structure in the Eastern Precinct built in the 9th century to commemorate the founding Prince.

It is the first time for wall painting fragments to be excavated from the alleged ruins of the monastery, said to have been built in 607 by Prince Shotoku in the town of Ikaruga and destroyed by fire 63 years later, officials of the Ikaruga board of education said.
The painted mural of the original monastery at Horyuji was highly likely to have been a feature of either the main hall or the pagoda, the officials said.
The technique used to paint the wall is thought to be similar to the one used in the wall paintings at the current main hall of Horyuji Temple and the ancient Kitora tomb in the Nara village of Asuka.

The oldest completely preserved temple complex in Japan, the Horyuji Temple, is a magnificent example of the architecture of the Asuka period (552-645) with masterly works of art covering the whole range of Japanese history.
As one of the "Seven Great Temples of Nara" this became the great center of Buddhism in Japan, from which the new faith was carried to all parts of the country.
The Horyuji, principal temple of the Shotoku sect, comprises 45 buildings, erected between the Asuka and Momoyama periods, 17 of which are classified as "major national treasures".

The story of Horyuji's founding can be discovered in the historical writings engraved on the back of the halo of the Yakusi Nyorai Buddha statue, located on the eastern side of the room in the temple's Main Hall, and in the official inventory of Horyuji property holdings recorded in 747.

There are 48 Buddhist monuments in the Horyuji area, in the Nara Prefecture.

The Gallery of Horyuji Treasures, one of the museum buildings in the Tokyo National Museum complex in Ueno Park, replaces an existing building on the same site that had served mainly to preserve the works of art in storage of the Horyuji collection.
The Horyuji Treasures consist of over 300 valuable objects, mainly from the 7th to 8th Centuries, which were donated to the Imperial Household by Horyuji Temple in 1878.
Also located within Ueno Park not far from the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures are The International Library of Children's Literature by Tadao Ando and The National Museum of Western Art by Le Corbusier.
