  HOSEI UNIVERSITY-University Outline**President Message
Hosei University was founded on the spirit of Liberty and the ideal of Progress at a turning point in world history, which was during the domestic movement to establish the Diet to promote modernization of Japan, and during the world transition of the free trading system centering on England.
Since that time, Hosei University contributed to the establishment of a modern legal system with the sprit of liberalism at its core, established the first faculty of economics in a private university, advanced the fulfillment of humanities by descendants of Soseki Natsume, and thus has built a tradition as one of Japan’s leading private universities.
In the latter half of the 20th century, the traditions of Hosei University were always expressed as a positive stance on social change, the university has sent out individuals with heightened independent ability through education and capable of making a contribution to society in a variety of ways.

In conjunction with the Hosei University Research Institute, California (HURIC), students in Japan interact with professors in the United States while having the benefit of staying in their native country.
The university purchased the IP-based Polycom iPower 9800 and ViewStation 4000 videoconferencing units, which allowed students in Japan to have face-to-face communication with their U.S. professors.
The Polycom iPower 9800 gave Hosei the closest experience to one-on-one interaction that was available.

And it was in April 1964 that Dokkyo University was founded, with Dr. Amano's motto "A university should be an institution for character building through learning" as the spiritual legacy of its foundation.
In addition, the University has specially attached institutions, including the Research Institute of Foreign Language Teaching, and the International Center, and has entered into academic-exchange agreements with universities and colleges in nine foreign countries.
Dokkyo University emphasizes individualized instruction and guidance through close personal contact, by placing the entering students in small classes, each to be taken care of by a specific educational advisor of his/her own, and by requiring the third- and fourth-year students to take small-group seminar courses.

 MEIJI UNIVERSITY : Library
The libraries of Meiji University are comprised of the main library at the Surugadai Campus, the Izumi Library for humanities and social science freshmen and sophomores at the Izumi Campus, and the Ikuta Library for students in the Schools of Science and Technology and Agriculture at the Ikuta Campus.
The Meiji University libraries also are members of the Yamanote Line private university library consortium with the libraries of the seven major universities Aoyama Gakuin University, Gakushuin University, Kokugakuin University, Toyo University, Hosei University, Meiji Gakuen University, and Rikkyo University, allowing mutual use of libraries including the loaning of books.
As part of regional cooperation, the Meiji University Library in March 2002 signed a mutual cooperation agreement with the Chiyoda Ward Library, allowing registered library users living in Chiyoda ward, in which the Surugadai Campus is located, free access to the Meiji University Library.

I was invited by Hosei University in Tokyo in November to present a concert of my choreographic works in classical Indian style and Buddhist meditations with two dancers from the Nataraj Dance Company.
I found students at Hosei deeply respectful of my status as an artist, performer and teacher and deeply interested to know about me, about the students at UMass and life in general in the United States.
The Noh drama presented by Professor Nishino, Director of the Hosei University Nohgaku Research Institute was the second reason for my visit to Japan.
