The district of Betul lies in the south, where as the Harda district faces with the western and south-western boundaries and Narsingpur and Chhindwara districts, close to the north-eastern and south-eastern sides of the district respectively.
Hoshangabad district lies in the central Narmada Valley and on the northern fringe of the Satpura Plateau.
Hoshangabad is freely connected by road and rail from the state capital, Bhopal and it is about 70 kms.

Hoshangabad is named after Sultan Hoshang Shah, second of the Ghori sultans of Malwa, who ruled from Mandu in the early fifteenth century.
Hoshangabad district is bounded by the districts of Raisen to the north, Narsinghpur to the east, Chhindwara to the southeast, Betul to the south, Harda to the west, and Sehore to the northwest.
Hoshangabad District is also home to Pachmarhi, a hill station and popular tourist spot in the Satpura Range in the southern part of the district.

North of the Satpuras is,the rich valley of the Nerbudda, which may be said to begin towards the north of the Jubbulpore district and to extend westward through the district of Narsinghpur as far as the western limit of Hoshangabad, a distance of nearly 300 m.
In this region the sandstone rocks are generally overlaid with heavy fl soil formed from the decaying trap, which is principally devoted to the cultivation of the spring crops, wheat and grain, while rice and hill millets are sown in the lighter and more sandy soils.
Next, the long and narrow valley of the Nerbudda from Jubbulpore to Hoshangabad is formed of deep alluvial deposits of extreme richness and excellently suited to the growth of wheat.

The Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme (HSTP) or Hoshangabad Vigyan, introduced in the district in 1978 in government schools, for the first time used a universally acknowledged pedagogical approach to the teaching of science.
In February, the Hoshangabad district planning committee (DPC) recommended to the State government that the programme be discontinued.

The Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme (HSTP) was started jointly in 1973 by two voluntary agencies, Friends Rural Centre and Kishore Bharati, in 16 government middle schools of the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh.
Over a period of 10 years, the programme grew from the initial 16 schools to cover all the middle schools in the district of Hoshangabad (around 200 in 1978) and then to school clusters in 14 districts of the state (over 450 schools in the 1990's).
Eklavya added that Hoshangabad did have an average record in terms of overall performance, and the performance level in science was in accordance with this average level of high school efficiency.

 29 dead in Hoshangabad road accident
At least twenty-nine people, including nine women and ten children, lost their lives when a truck fell from a bridge into a drain at Piparia near Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.
Another 46 were also injured in the accident, the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Hoshangabad, Faiz Ahmed said.
A case was registered against seven persons, including the truck driver and the labour contractor at Piparia police station.

After the area was declared a sanctuary, about 9,000 tribals who reside in 150 villages within and on the periphery, dependent on the forest produce, stand to be affected, Sunil said.
