Hoshea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoshea ("salvation") was the last king of Israel and son of Elah.
According to the author of 2 Kings, Hoshea conspired against and slew his predecessor, Pekah (2 Kings 15:30); Shalmaneser V then campaigned against Hoshea, and forced him to submit and render tribute (17:3).
The account in 2 Kings 17:4 states that Shalmaneser arrested Hoshea, then laid siege to Samaria; some scholars explain that Shalmaneser must have summoned Hoshea to his court to explain the missing tribute, which resulted in the imprisonment of the king of Israel, and the Assyrian army sent into his land.

Hoshea ben Be’eri was a prophet who prophesied in the days of four kings of Yehudah, and the days of Yerovam II, king of Israel.
It is a singular story: Hashem commands Hoshea to marry an eshet zenunim – a woman known to be unfaithful – and to have children from her.
Hoshea found this unconditional acceptance of teshuva hard to understand, and his idea of justice was that Hashem should choose Himself a different nation in place of the Children of Israel.

Seve was too wise a monarch to be persuaded by the ambassadors, or seduced by the "presents" which Hoshea sent, into an active alliance with Israel against Assyria.* The attempted "conspiracy"** became known to Shalmaneser.
The further progress of this war is only briefly summarized in the Biblical record (2 Kings 17:5, 6), which is chiefly concerned with the issue of the struggle, and its spiritual import and lessons.

Hoshea was bound to pay tribute to Assyria, a payment similar to "protection" paid to extortionists in return for security from their violence.
Hoshea decided that it was time to break away from the "protection" payments to the king of Assyria, and knowing that he could not muster a large enough army to defeat Shalmaneser, turned instead to the nation of Egypt for help.

Hoshea himself was one of these assassins (2 Ki 15:30), and the nominee of Tiglath-pileser III, whose annals read, "Pekah I slew, Hoshea I appointed over them." Though called king, Hoshea was thus really a satrap of Assyria and held his appointment only during good behavior.
Grave suspicions were thus aroused as to the loyalty of Hoshea, and on these being confirmed by the confession or discovery that messengers had passed to "So king of Egypt," and the further withholding of the tribute (2 Ki 17:4), Hoshea was arrested and shut up in prison.
Such was the ignominious end of a line of kings, not one of whom had, in all the vicissitudes of two and a quarter centuries, been in harmony with theocratic spirit, or realized that the true welfare and dignity of the state lay in the unalloyed worship of Yahweh.

This ancient policy of transplanting a conquered people into a foreign land, was founded on the idea that, among a mixed multitude, differing in language and religion, they would be kept in better subjection, and have less opportunity of combining together to recover their independence.

The general sequence of events causing the end of the Israelite state involves the actions of Hoshea and the Assyrian king Shalmaneser V. It is clear that Hoshea paid a large tribute to the Assyrian king and at some point rebelled, which consisted of withholding tribute.
Hayes and Kuan suggest that these actions taken against Hoshea (his seizure and imprisonment) are the actions described in 2 Kings 17:4 (1991: 161).
The third rebellion in which Samaria surrendered to the Assyrians took place in Hoshea’s ninth year, which is said to be 722 (1991: 168).

Yahweh tells Hoshea to name the final child "Lo-Ammi." This name literally means "not my people." Thus, Yahweh is saying that the house of Yisrael is no longer His people.
This parallels Hoshea where it is stated that "in the place where it is said to them 'You are not My people,' THEY SHALL BE CALLED, 'YOU ARE THE SONS OF THE LIVING EL.'" Hos 1:10.

A Proposed Solution to a Chronological Problem
These verses tell us the seventeenth year of Pekah was the same as the accession year of Ahaz, that the twelfth year of Ahaz was the same as the accession year of Hoshea, and that the 20-year reign of Pekah ended with the accession of Hoshea.
The construction adopted in The SDA Bible Commentary follows closely that proposed by Thiele.[400] The construction is set forth as tentative and acknowledged to be incomplete, since it does not provide an explanation of 2.Kings 17:1 short of assuming a copyist error.
Hoshea is also given an accession date of year 12 of Ahaz (2.K 17:1).

For the Samaria fall (the internal synchronism Hezekiah 6/7 - Hoshea 9) a TPQrel of y5+1 and a TAQrel of y6 is extant, which may be equaled with the TPQabs of -622 and the TAQabs of -720 respectively.
