Hoshi Sato was a noted female Human linguist stationed aboard the Earth starship Enterprise during its historic mission of exploration.
Hoshi was the first Human to become fluent in the Klingon language, which she learned from a linguistic database provided by the Vulcans.
According to a bio of Sato partly seen on screen in ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II", her husband was named Takashi Kimura and he was killed sometime prior to 2246 along with his family on the planet Tarsus IV when Governor Kodos declared martial law.

Hoshi and her husband die in 2246 when the colony where they live, Tarsus IV, is stricken by a food shortage, and Governor Kodos orders the deaths of half of the colony's population.

Sato was aboard the Enterprise when it was trapped in a Tholian web (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly"), though she was able to evacuate on an escape pod before the ship was destroyed and was picked up by the commandeered USS Defiant.
Hoshi subsequently took command of the Defiant, proclaimed herself "Empress Sato" and ordered Fleet Admiral Gardner to surrender and stand by for instructions, or she would open fire on Earth.

Thus she was scared, to say the least, to go on her first mission aboard an alien vessel, which unfortunately was filled with dead aliens, too.
Hoshi did not put much trust in her translating skills in the first few months of the mission, but once she had saved the ship by chatting away with a friendly alien, she did gain some self-confidence.

While they are talking, she is also trying to get the translator to understand enough of the alien language to send a distress call, so she keeps saying the word 'distress.' She IS in distress, but she's saying the word for a completely different reason.
It was their crewmen who were killed, and another of their ships that eventually, with Sato's help, came to the aid of Enterprise when they were about to meet the same fate.

Hoshi is left very puzzled, but in a later scene the audience will likely have the same reaction, as on the bridge Archer and T'Pol seem completely unaware of this order and wonder why Hoshi hasn't gone on-duty yet.

Hoshi faced a shipfull of dead aliens against her will and wound up telling the captain she would be willing to be part of future away teams.
