 African-Americans in Motion Pictures
Race movies were low-budgeted and mostly aimed at fl audiences in segregated movie-houses of the South and where large city fl populations dwelled in the North.
These two movies broke grounds, for they dealt with light-skinned Blacks "passing for white." The implications and privilege of a Black crossing the line and working and socializing with whites were the "must see" movies at the box office in 1949.
The movie was a success due to the untouched topics of racial situations, ethnic tensions, and human encounters of anger.

Mobile Army Surgical Hospital - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) refers to a United States Army medical unit serving as a fully functional hospital in a combat area of operations.
It was an alternative to the system of portable surgical hospitals, field hospitals, and general hospitals used during World War II.
This proved to be highly successful; it was noted that during the Korean War, a seriously wounded soldier that made it to a MASH unit alive had a 97% chance of survival once he received treatment.

But no one seeing 'M*A*S*H' in 1970 confused the film for anything but a caustic comment on the Vietnam War; this is one of the counterculture movies that exploded into the mainstream at the end of the '60s.
Altman's style of cruel humor, overlapping dialogue, and densely textured visuals brought the material to life in an all-new kind of war movie (or, more precisely, antiwar movie).
The film's huge success spawned the long-running TV series, a considerably softer take on the material; of the film's cast, only Gary Burghoff repeated his role on the small screen, as the slightly clairvoyant Radar O'Reilly.

Movie Info for Titicut Follies on MSN Movies
Frederick Wiseman made his documentary debut with this controversial 84-minute survey of conditions that existed during the mid-'60s at the State Prison for the Criminally Insane in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
Robert Coles (The New Republic) wrote, "After a showing of Titicut Follies the mind does not dwell on the hospital's ancient and even laughable physical plant, or its pitiable social atmosphere.
What sticks, what really hurts is the sight of human life made cheap and betrayed." The story behind the complicated legal issues raised by this film and the attempts to suppress it are detailed by Carolyn Anderson and Thomas W. Benson in their book, Documentary Dilemmas: Frederick Wiseman's "Titicut Follies" (Southern Illinois University Press, 1991).

 M*A*S*H - Special Edition - Movie Review
The cast, largely unknown when the movie was made, do a superb job of bringing these characters to life - many careers were launched on the back of this film.
Although there is no doubt that the film has aged, much of the humour still works, and the blood-and-guts message that war isn't pleasant remains all too relevant.
Summary: Still a funny movie more than thirty years after it was made even if some of the jokes have lost their relevance in the modern world.
