The Australian Hospital Ship Centaur built on the Clyde at Grennock in 1924, was converted early in 1943 to serve in that capacity.
It was in the Indian Ocean in November of 1941 that the ship rescued survivors of the German Armed Merchant ship Kormoran, which had been sunk in the fight to the death with the Australian Light Cruiser HMAS Sydney.
When fitted out as a Hospital Ship she had red crosses painted on her sides, funnel and stern, from the air, a red cross was evident, horizontally on the after deck house.

In addition to operating and maintaining the ship during its five-month humanitarian mission to Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea, Mercy's 65 civil service mariners worked alongside the ship's Navy medical personnel to improve the lives of those affected by the disaster.
Nathan Smith, one of the masters of Mercy during her mission, accepted the award on behalf of the ship's crew during the ceremony.

I've seen a ship delay leaving port for a passenger that was injured on a shore excursion and on the same trip an ambulance met the ship when arriving in the same port for a different problem.
On the cruise ship, you are only there for a few hours, and you did not even begin to see the beauty of the areas and what it has to offer.

During the ship's 10 days in New Orleans, Comfort's medical staff has worked alongside local civilian physicians to treat trauma patients aboard ship in a partnership between the Navy and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
Comfort is one of two hospital ships in the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command and is normally kept pierside in reduced operating status with a cadre crew 58 Sailors and 18 civil service mariners aboard.

When finished the JUTLANDIA was a modern hospital ship with 300 beds, 3 operating theaters, a dental clinic, X-Ray facilities and staffed by a rapidly assembled, but very competent, medical staff.
Upon return to Korea for its second tour (dates of these unknown) it was anchored at Inch'on, close enough to the fighting front that wounded could be evacuated to the ship directly from battalion and regimental aid stations.
