Submarine film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Films of this subgenre typically focus on a small but determined crew of submariners battling against not only their enemies, but also the extreme pressure of being underwater (as their submarines typically descend past "hull crush depth", a depth which varies from movie to movie) and being in such proximity to one another.
This imbues films of the subgenre with a great deal of dramatic tension, which is added to by occasional but dramatic battle scenes in which the crew waits with bated breath while sonar pings, depth charges explode overhead, and bolts fly out of bulkheads in the submarine.
Despite the drama of the battle scenes in submarine films, however, the mainstay of the tension in these movies occurs away from battle, which sets this subgenre apart from its parent genre of war films.

It is debatable whether one should put down this film because of its inaccurate portrayal of the book it's based on, but as a TV movie this proved very tight and and absorbing.
Besides Hauer, the acting by the rest of the Soviet crew was superb.
There are many submarine-based movies of late, and although I'm watching this three years late, Hostile Waters certainly has kept it's head high.

Plot: This films script is an adaptation of David Guterson's novel of the same name, written by Scott Hicks (Shine) and Ron Bass (Memoirs of Geisha, Entrapment, Stepmom, What Dreams May Come, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, My Best Friend's Wedding, Dangerous Minds, Waiting to Exhale, The Joy Luck Club, and Rain Man).
The film is smoothly integrated in to the picture there is never a moment when the audience feels pulled out of the illusionary world.
Bottom Line: This films biggest flaw is it is trying to fit too big of a story in to too short a time period.

The film, Hostile Waters, made in 1997, starred Rutger Hauer, Martin Sheen and Max von Sydow, depicted the events of how the vessel commanded by Captain Igor Britanov, was supposed to have come to grief.

His submarine was patrolling off Bermuda when an explosion followed by a fire broke out in a missile tube dangerously close to the boat's nuclear reactor, killing three soviet sailors and resulting in the death of a fourth sailor as a result of the damage to the submarine.
