Hostilian was born in an unknown date, after 230, as the son of the future emperor Trajan Decius by his wife Herennia Cupressenia Etruscilla.
Following his father's accession to the throne, Hostilian received the treatment of an imperial prince, but was always kept in the shade of his brother Herennius, who enjoyed the privileges of being older and heir.
The campaign proved to be a disaster: both Herennius and Decius died in the Battle of Abrittus and became the first two emperors to be killed by a foreign army in battle.

The father and son, now joint rulers, then embarked in an expedition against king Cniva of the Goths to punish the invaders for the raids.
Hostilian remained in Rome and the empress Herennia Etruscilla was named regent.
With the news of the death of the emperors, the army proclaimed Trebonianus Gallus emperor, but in Rome they were succeeded by Hostilian, who would die shortly afterwards in an outbreak of plague.

 Trebonianus Gallus
On July 1 251, Decius and his co-emperor and son Herennius Etruscus died in the battle of Abrittus, at the hands of the Goths they were supposed to punish for raids into the empire.
When the army heard the news, the soldiers proclaimed Gallus emperor, despite Hostilian, Decius' surviving son, ascending the imperial throne in Rome.
While Gallus marched on Rome, an outbreak of plague struck the city and killed the young Hostilian.

Herennius Etruscus was dispatched to Moesia at the head of a Roman army, while Hostilian remained in Rome with his mother.
Hostilian succumbed to it in November, 251, after a reign as Augustus of only four months.
Nothing further is known of Hostilian's mother, Herennia Etruscilla, although it is presumed she survived to sink into obscurity.

Trajan Decius elevated his son Hostilian to co-emperor in 251.
He was apparently much younger than his older brother Herennius Etruscus, and did not have much power; his mother Herennia Etruscilla acted as regent.

Roman Emperors - DIR Herennius Etruscus and Hostilian
By the end of his reign, Decius had elevated his son to the rank of Augustus, a distinction which Hostilian never enjoyed while his father and brother lived.
Decius and Herennius Etruscus thus became the first Roman emperors to be killed by foreign enemies in the field of battle.
The numismatic evidence throws little light on official distinctions between the brothers; Hostilian is only sparsely depicted in the coinage, and all but a few of his coins are from 251.

Hostilian was the son of Trajan Decius and brother of Herennius Etruscus.
Both Decius and Etruscus died in battle leaving him as sole emperor, briefly, before one of Decius's generals, Trebonianus Gallus, was also elevated to the throne by the surviving soldiers.

Life for Hostilian, the youngest of two sons of Trajan Decius and Herennia Etruscilla, was brief and tragic.
In either case, when his father and brother died in battle in the summer of 251 Hostilian and his mother were still safely residing in Rome.
The widowed empress seemingly retained her title of Augusta, and young Hostilian was actually raised from Caesar to Augustus, a title he shared with his new ‘adoptive father’ Gallus.

Gallus retained Decius' younger son Hostilian as his co-emperor and allowed Decius' widow to retain the prerogatives of Augusta rather than elevating his own wife.
Most likely it was given out in honor of the elevation of Hostilian to Augustus at the beginning of the reign or the elevation of Volusian only slightly later.
The portrait of Gallus is less individualized than some (a bit like Phillip?) suggesting that this die may date early in the reign before the appearance of Gallus was well known at the mint.

These dispositions were made previous to an intended punishing campaign against king Cniva of the Goths, to punish him over the raids on the Danubian frontier.
But later in 251, an outbreak of plague stroked Rome and Hostilian died of the epidemics, being the first emperor in 40 years and one of only 13 to die of natural causes.
His timely death also opened the way for the sole rule of Trebonianus.

Even though she held the title Augusta and resided in Rome, she was largely powerless because before he left the capital her husband installed Publius Licinius Valerianus (the future emperor Valerian) in a newly created position that gave him almost unlimited authority in the city of Rome.
When the news arrived that her husband and eldest son had been killed in a Gothic ambush, Etruscilla and her youngest son, Hostilian might have expected the worst.
Numismatic evidence shows that Etruscilla probably retained the title into Gallus’ reign, for the output for her and Hostilian is higher at Antioch than that of her slain husband and son.
