Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College President Dolores M. Fernandez announced today that she will be stepping down from the presidency, following the conclusion of a transition process for her successor.
At this event, Hostos President Dolores M. Fernández stated: “This is the fortieth year of this college’s existence, so in addition to celebrating our graduates’ accomplishments, we are also continuing our celebration of the ruby anniversary of our jewel in the South Bronx.
The scholarships were awarded by the New York Daily News at Hostos Community College’s Honors Convocation on May 27, 2008, and by Banco Popular at a reception held at the Marriott Marquis in New York on April 30, 2008.

Hostos Community College was created by an act of the Board of Higher Education on April 22, 1968, thus satisfying the demands of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic leaders who urged the establishment of a college to serve the needs of the South Bronx.
This effort was rebuffed by strong college and community opposition, which led the State Legislature to include a guarantee of Hostos' existence in the Landes Higher Education Act passed on June 9, 1976.
The College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.

Hostos Community College was originally created to address the requests of Latino leaders who urged the establishment of a college to serve the needs of the South Bronx.
Hostos Community College was established to provide increased educational opportunities leading to socioeconomic mobility for first and second generation Hispanics, African Americans, and other residents of New York City who have encountered significant barriers to higher education.
Bronx Community College was established in 1957 and moved to its current location in 1973.

While the elite former women's colleges inch toward gender parity, a female stronghold is developing among the low-cost community colleges, where many of the students are the first female members of their families to read and write.
Otherwise, Sarah Lawrence College (74 percent female) and Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College (76 percent female) are a study in contrasts.
At community colleges as diverse as The Peralta Colleges (Oakland, Calif.), Pikes Peak Community College (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Alabama Southern Community College (in four rural Alabama communities), women are now a larger percentage of the student body than at such schools as Vassar, Bennington and Skidmore, once all-female.

Hostos is the only CUNY campus whose mission is specifically bilingual; it allows Spanish-dominant students to begin courses in their native language while developing English facility in an English as a Second Language Program.
Like many other library faculty, the librarians at Hostos support the goal of an information literacy program in which its constellation of skills is taught in a multi-level, curriculum integrated program that starts when students first enter the college and continues throughout their academic careers.
Passing the CPE is required for graduation from all of the CUNY colleges as well as for community college students wishing to transfer to a CUNY four-year college.

The report concluded that Hostos could expand its “market share” through “redirecting some of its academic programs.” Among the changes recommended was that the college “eliminate the lowest ESL level,” as well as developmental instruction in Spanish, moving these students into the noncredit College Language Immersion Program (CLIP).
Since February, union officers have raised Hostos issues with CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein in the monthly Labor-Management Committee meetings and urged him to come to the campus and meet with the college community.

The Hostos Community College archives collects unpublished materials of permanent historical value including official records, correspondence, papers and publications generated by the administration, academic departments, faculty, special programs and student organizations since 1970.
The archives, a unit of the Hostos Community College Library, also maintains a comprehensive collection of works published by and about Eugenio María de Hostos, namesake of the college, among other special collections.
