Talk:One-hit wonders in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What The "Pop 100" is today greatly resembles the "Hot 100" of the early 80's through 1998, when it was compiled ONLY from the four "Top 40" singles charts that I mentioned above.
Look for Top 40 hits on the pop singles chart, which is basically the same thing as the Billboard Hot 100 chart, when looking for hits before 1983.
The Hot 100 makes an impact for the music industry because it contains all the music that is being played on the radio (pop, hip-hop, country, etc.,) and sold.

 Articles - Billboard magazine
In 1990, the country singles chart was the first chart to use SoundScan and BDS.
They were followed by the Hot 100 and the R and B chart in 1991.
However, the R and B singles chart did not have this restriction, so "Into the Groove" actually charted on the R and B singles chart.

Faith topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart for 3 weeks and the Hot Country Singles Sales chart for 10 weeks with "It Matters To Me."
It took a few odd jobs before Faith was discovered while working at a music publishing company and eventually cut a demo of a track named "It Scares Me." But it still wasn't until the 90s when Faith's debut LP started her success on the country charts and eventually crossing over to the pop charts.
Faith grew up singing at 4H Club's, family reunions, churches, and eventually country fairs.

Jerry Reed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a singer, he may be best remembered for his novelty song "When you're Hot, You're Hot" for which he received the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1972.
He continued releasing both country and rockabilly singles to little notice until rocker Gene Vincent covered his "Crazy Legs" in 1958.
During the 1970 television season, he was a regular on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and in 1971 issued his biggest hit, the chart-topper "When You're Hot, You're Hot," which was also the title track of his first solo album.

Digital players make hits out of songs that don't sell in stores
The trend recently was reflected in a change Billboard magazine made to the way it selects its Hot 100, now factoring legal downloads of singles into its formula for picking the top tunes.
Back in the days of the spindle and the 45, it was easy to keep track of which songs were the most popular in the country by tracking their sales.
The impact of figuring the digitals into the top singles is that a song such as Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is suddenly on the fast track up the singles charts.

The End of the British Invasion - Why can't Britpop crack the Billboard Hot 100 anymore? By Mark Jenkins
(Old-timers will remember the Hot 100 as the "singles chart," although these days most radio hits are not actually released as singles.) The Brit-free chart, published in the music-biz trade journal's April 27 issue, may be a one-week fluke.
These days, hit-radio airplay (the primary basis of the Hot 100) reflects only a narrow slice of the music market—mostly teen pop, RandB, hip-hop, nu-metal, and country.
Among the April 27 issue's top 100 albums are only five by acts that might be considered British—and only one of those, neo-soul singer Craig David, fully qualifies.

Mario adds another Billboard No. 1
On Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road" moves from 3 to 1 to end the one-week reign of Brad Paisley's "Mud on the Tires," which falls to No. 2.
As it is also the Hot Digital Songs king for the fifth week, the track is one of the singles to benefit from the infusion of digital sales to the Hot 100 mix.
Among the things to note about this week's Hot 100 are that the "last week" rank on the chart reflects the list's new formula, rather than the ranks published under the old methodology.
