Maz Article: Reissue Targetmaster Hot Rod (Collection #13)
Hot Rod was of course first introduced to fans in the 1986 feature film Transformers: The Movie and was the main character in the film.
Hot Rod was then reissued in the US by Hasbro but he was renamed Rodimus Major and now Takara have released what is probably the ultimate Hot Rod reissue, the seventh main incarnation, the Collection #13 reissue of Targetmaster Hot Rod.
Hot Rod's robot mode has always been very show-accurate and has had personality due to the design of his facial features, the wide shoulders, the chrome guns/exhausts and the yellow wing on his back.

 Road Films
Although the road trip in George Lucas' American Graffiti (1973) wasn't very extensive, the entire film was about hot-rod drag-stripping down the main street of a small California town during one summer's night.
Road films have been a staple of American films from the very start, and have ranged in genres from westerns, comedies, gangster/crime films, dramas, and action-adventure films.
Victor Fleming's The Wizard of Oz (1939) was a quintessential 'road' film as Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) took an odyssey from her drab, black and white Kansas 'home' to the wonderful land of Oz to learn more about herself, while pursued by the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton).

The film was Lucas' homage to the memories of his own teenage years in Modesto, California, remembered with vintage cars and dragsters, drive-ins (Mel's), an almost non-stop rock soundtrack, teenage activities (hot rod crusin' and makin' out), and characteristic hair and clothing styles.
George Lucas was the key figure behind the American film industry's evolution (or, according to most critics, de-evolution) from cinema to spectacle during the late '70s.
The film from Lucas (an ex-USC film student and intern at Warner Bros.) was almost not made when every studio in Hollywood refused it, except for Universal.

It's a masterpiece of stunt driving, down-and-dirty photography, and sharp, furious cutting; the unsung hero of the picture is editor Warner Leighton, who paces the film perfectly and never lets it stall.
Directed by longtime cinematographer Arthur Ripley, the film is strong on characters and action, the latter fulfilled by a memorable chase scene at the end.

Until now Campilongo has displayed two sides: With his band, the 10 Gallon Cats, he recorded two albums of what could be best described as demented hillbilly instrumentals.

While this may not be the most politically correct move for the sole female character in the film (excluding potential Junkion and Lithonian females seen in wide-shots), it fits in with Hot Rod's stereotype to have the attention of the only chick around and it does establish Arcee as part of his peer-group.
Still, while he does not have much to do with the film's story, like Blurr, he would reappear frequently in the TV series, as would the Junkions, the slogan-spouting Transformers who the rest of the Autobots are running from while Hot Rod and Co are causing political upheaval on Quintessa.
The Junkions also seem to have heard of him and are quite willing to join in his destruction.

And, notice that Corny Collins does the "walk-ups" to the records he's about to play on his dance-show tighter than most oldtime Top-40 radio stations were ever formated...and, probably better than most of today's "Good Times, Eight Oldies" radio stations get it done.
