A June 12 1886, item in a local Montana paper, the Livingston Enterprise, mentions Mendenhall's renovations to the hotel at Hunters Hot Springs, saying the "...old hotel is being completely overhauled from cellar to garret...the outside of the house as well, is receiving attention".
There were indeed masquerade balls held at Hunters Hot Springs as early as 1905, but--if the disputed photo was taken during the 1880's--there would have been no reason for anyone to impersonate Butch, Sundance and Harvey Logan because these men were unknown rustlers and drifters then.
Fannie Elizabeth was postmistress at Hunters Hot Springs between 1887 and 1890 [note 21] and she and her husband, William Carrol Officer, leased the HHS hotel from Cyrus Mendenhall between 1885 and 1891 [note 22].

The history of the Rich family in Montana is very colorful and is inextricably intertwined with the early development of Hunters Hot Springs.
Frank's brother A. Rich homesteaded a ranch a mile and a half northwest from Hunters Hot Springs in 1882 and later was elected public administrator for overseeing the maintenance to Hunters Hot Springs-area roads and bridges.
Both Frank Rich and A. (Albert Americus) Rich were living at Hunters Hot Springs in the spring and summer of 1886 so both were therefore in a position to have been in the long-puzzling photograph taken on the porch of the Hunters Hot Springs Hotel.

As well, my fellow researchers and I had established the identities of three of the men shown in Hunters Hot Springs photograph: Man 1 is Albert Americus Rich; Man 7 is Franklin Rich (brother to Man 1); and Man 15 is likely to be Cyrus B. Mendenhall, proprietor of the Hunters Hot Springs Hotel.
All three were businessmen local to the area of Hunters Hot Springs.
Brekke uncovered additional photographs taken at Hunters Hot Springs which, I believe, depict two of the men who are also shown in the well-known 15-man group shot.
