Hot Tuna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hot Tuna is an American band, formed by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as an acoustic (and occasionally electric blues) spin-off of Jefferson Airplane.
Casady and Kaukonen added Will Scarlett on harmonica and recorded 1969's Hot Tuna, which was followed by a long-series of well-received albums that played mostly to a small and devoted cult following.
After going their separate ways in the late 1970's, Casady and Kaukonen re-formed Hot Tuna in the mid-1980's with guitarist and producer Michael Falzarano.

McHale said the tuna harvest last year was the largest in 30 years, with about 930 metric tons caught by commercial fishermen in the United States, although most of those fish are caught in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts areas, he said.
Catch rates of tuna among sport fishermen are estimated based on telephone surveys and dockside interviews that are evaluated at the end of the season.
Still, as Grondin said, the majority of the time tuna fishing for anyone is filled with menial tasks, waiting for the thrill of fighting the fastest fish in the ocean.

 CMT.com : Hot Tuna : Biography
Hot Tuna -- originally dubbed Hot Shit, much to the chagrin of their label, RCA -- first began taking shape in 1969, while both Casady and Kaukonen were still active members of the Jefferson Airplane; in fact, their first performances were sandwiched between regular Airplane gigs.
Finally, Casady and Kaukonen played a handful of club dates under the Hot Tuna aegis, reforming on a more concrete basis in 1986; by 1990, their ranks included singer/multi-instrumentalist Michael Falzarano, a veteran of many early reunion shows.
That year Hot Tuna released Pair a Dice Found, its first collection of new studio material in over a decade; a series of live releases followed, including 1992's Live at Sweetwater, 1997's Splashdown Two and 1999's And Furthurmore.

Actually, the transitions are not that dramatic, since Kaukonen continues to favor the same kinds of guitar figures whether he's playing acoustic or electric, and his own songs, albeit with more abstract lyrics, are steeped in the traditions that produced the cover material.
The compilers might have pleased Hot Tuna fans by placing more emphasis on the group's jamming abilities, including more of its live material ("Death Don't Have No Mercy" is especially missed), and saved some of the Kaukonen compositions for a "best of Jorma" album.
But that is not to say that the compilation isn't a balanced, representative condensation of Hot Tuna's career on RCA; it is. It's just that, like the Grateful Dead's, Hot Tuna's studio albums didn't necessarily reflect the best of the group as a performing unit.

Recorded April 30, 1971 at the KSAN studio (a Bay Area radio station), this is an excellent performance by Hot Tuna, featuring Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Papa John, and Sammy Piazza.
The set list is familiar to fans, with most of the songs having appeared on the first two Tuna releases (except "Search My Heart" and uncredited number (no writer listed) that feels like Jorma's distilation of the Rev Gary Davis' fingerpicking style that colors ALL of Hot Tuna's blues numbers).
For someone just approaching Hot Tuna, I'd recommend the first or Burgers to start, but if you're familiar with the basics of Tuna, this is a good set to explore their acoustic side, along with the first side of "Double Dose," their 1978 double live album.

Hot Tuna: 25 Years and Runnin': Vestapol Video 13020
Long before MTV Unplugged, Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady thought it would be cool to perform a few old blues as a set-breaking contrast to the Airplane's acid-and revolution epiphanies.
The documentary's subtitle, Live at Sweetwater (a Bay area landmark club), is the crux of this video with "live" performances of ragtime blues standards and Tuna originals that exemplify the free spirit that's kept Hot Tuna runnin' all these years.
Jorma and Jack are ably assisted by Tuna mates Michael Falzarano (guitar, vocals, mandolin) and Pete Sears (keyboards, accordion).

 The Hangar
The name Hot Tuna, like the name Jefferson Airplane itself, can be attributed to a play on the language of traditional blues.
The words to "Ja-Da," however, are a far cry from those of "Keep On Truckin'." For the origin of the lyrics to the Tuna staple, one would have to dig deep into the blues bag for a handful of songs that were passed around during the 1920s and '30s.
But where Blind Boy Fuller suggested in his song that the answer to the question he posed could very well be "sardines but it ain't in no can," Jorma left the particular kind of fish out of his interpretation and answered instead with the name of his group.

The musical collaboration that eventually became Hot Tuna started long before the name of the group even existed, even before the collaboration between guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady manifested itself in the 60's rock band Jefferson Airplane.
The crowd was an interesting mixture of young and old, including obvious long time fans of the duo from the Jefferson Airplane/electric Hot Tuna days to a whole new generation of Hot Tuna fans.
As Hot Tuna's performance carried on, Jorma and Jack performed a number fo familiar tunes from previous recordings as well as some new material that included instrumental numbers as well as vocal performances.

In contrast to other fish where the RM is near the skin, the RM of these sharks and tunas is near the backbone.
Even though the ancestors of bony tuna and cartilaginous sharks diverged more than 400 million years ago, selection pressure for high-performance swimming in each group seems to have occurred independently about 50 million years ago.

Hot Tuna, on the contrary, did not disappoint purists with their first release.
Not only are the songs all covers (there are a couple tracks, plus a couple more bonuses on the CD edition, that are Kaukonen originals, but they are undistinguishable from the "old" material anyway), they're also all performed on acoustic and bass, with only Will Scarlett's harmonica to add to the mix.
This is not exceptional music, and I guess Hot Tuna could experience some serious competition in that area by the early '70s (Seatrain, anybody?), but it's, well, as exceptional as far as unexceptional music is able to go, if you get my weird drift.

Hot Tuna began in 1970 as a side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who wanted to put aside psychedelia to explore their blues roots.
Their format has frequently changed over the years (shifting back and forth from acoustic to electric), as has their personnel (the version of the band featuring fiddler Papa John Creach is beloved to fans), but their blues-rock sound remains consistent.
