hot mirror   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A hot mirror is a specialized dielectric glass, a dichromatic interference filter often employed to protect optical systems by reflecting heat back into the light source.
A hot mirror can be designed to be inserted into the optical system at an incidence angle varying between zero and 45 degrees, and are useful in a variety of applications where heat build-up can damage components or adversely affect spectral characteristics of the illumination source.
Wavelengths reflected by an infrared hot mirror range from about 750 to 1250 nanometers.

Mirror - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a plane mirror, a parallel beam of light changes its direction as a whole, whilst still remaining parallel; the images formed by a plane mirror are virtual images, of the same size as the original object (see mirror image).
Mirror surfaces are sometimes given thin film overcoatings both to retard degradation of the surface and to increase their reflectivity in parts of the spectrum where they will be used.
Mirrors, typically large and unframed, are frequently used in interior decoration to create an illusion of space, and amplify the apparent size of a room.

 Dichroic coatings
Hot and Cold Mirrors are a specific type of dichroic filter used to remove unwanted energy from the light emitted by a source.
UV Hot Mirror filters are specially designed to transmit more than 80% on average from 245-460 nm and reflect more than 70% in average from 800-1050nm at normal incidence.
This cold mirror is specially designed to reflect more than 95% average of ultra-violet rays from 350-450 nm and transmit more than 90% average 550 -1200nm at 45 degrees angle of incidence.

CVI Optical Components: Optics - mirrors, dielectric, hot, cold
Dielectric mirrors can be optimized for a particular angle of incidence and reflection bandwidth in the UV, visible or infrared regions.
Hot and cold mirrors are used to separate the infrared radiation (heat) from the visible part of the spectrum.
These mirrors are extensively used in optical systems which are temperature sensitive, since most of the incident energy is either transmitted of reflected with minimal absorption.

A few years ago when I was shooting with a Sony DSC-D700 and a Kodak DCS-5c, I was told to use a HOT MIRROR FILTER to reduce noise in my images.
A hot mirror filter is a glass filter that reflects near infrared light.
To do this you need the opposite of a hot mirror filter, ie one that filters out visible light, only admitting infrared.

Nikon Forum: D2h and hot mirror
After examining comparison of the effects of several different filters to eliminate near IR contamination provided by a friend of mine, I really doubt the legitimacy of using a hot mirror for the purpose in question.
The hot mirror should be intended for, like its name, blocking the influence of "true" IR that transmits heat by way of reflecting it.
Also, the hot mirror's restriction of incident angle of light makes everything meaningless to me because I mostly like to use standard or wide angle primes.

I figured that because the G2 has a hot mirror filter, you should barely see the IR signal (or not at all) coming from the remote control through the LCD monitor.
I just do not believe that the G3 does not have a hot mirror or some other means of reducing IR light hitting the CCD.
Must admit though that IR images tend to show more hot pixels than regular full color ones, perhaps due to the long (but not too long) exposures, and the monochromatic nature of the images.

In applications where heat build up is a concern, a hot mirror positioned with a near 0° AOI provides protection by blocking the unwanted IR wavelengths.
Cold mirrors work in just the opposite way, transmitting IR and reflecting visible.
A 45° incidence cold mirror is typically used to transmit the damaging IR and reflect the visible to the optical system.

Nikon Forum: Does Nikon make a hot mirror filter?
Hot mirror is only effective within about 30 degree of incident angle of light, which means that you are restricted to medium tele or longer lenses to get its designated effect.
If you want to use standard or wide angle lenses, and their filter sizes are no larger than 52mm, BG 38 or BG40 by Schott, or C500S, CM500S, C5000 or CM5000 by Hoya would work better.
They are not hot mirrors but color glasses that eliminate near IR more efficiently than the hot mirror and they are free from incident angle issue.

 K3PGP - Experimenters Corner - UV-IR Infrared Blocking Filter
Hot mirrors are the preferred type of IR blocking filter due to their low loss in the visible spectrum and very sharp cutoff below 700 nm compared to the cheaper blue - green glass type of filter which is typical in most color CCD cameras.
There is absolutely nothing to prevent one from using the exact opposite type of filter (known as a cold mirror) to block the visible part of the light spectrum and pass the infrared part of the spectrum below 700 nm.
However, the RGB / IR loss tests that I've run on the system indicate that the insertion loss of the hot mirror is almost undetectable in the visible range so I have to assume the above normal incidence chart is either in error or a worst case measurement.
