Hot reading -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In (Phenomena that appear to contradict physical laws and suggest the possibility of causation by mental processes) parapsychology, hot reading is the use of foreknowledge when giving a psychic reading.
The reader can gain information about the sitter (person getting the reading) through a variety of means, such as research or overhearing a conversation.
This is commonly used in conjunction with (additional info and facts about cold reading) cold reading, and can sometimes explain how a psychic reader can get a specific hit.

AFT - Hot Topics - Reading
Reading is the fundamental skill upon which all formal education depends.
Any child who doesn’t learn to read early and well will not easily master other skills and knowledge, and is unlikely to ever flourish in school or in life.
Low reading achievement, more than any other factor, is the root cause of chronically low-performing schools, which harm students and contribute to the loss of public confidence in our school system.

Cold reading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cold reading is a technique used by salespeople, interrogators, hypnotists, psychics, graphologists, palmists, astrologers, con men etc. to convince another person that they know more about them than they actually do.
A number of performers have studied the techniques of cold reading and have posed as psychics offering either private fortune-telling sessions or open forum "talking with the dead" sessions in the manner of alleged psychic John Edward.
If the techniques of cold reading are combined with the use of information obtained covertly, this is known as hot reading.

AFT - Hot Topics - Reading - What works for reading
Any approach to reading instruction must include early, explicit instruction in "phonemic awareness"--an understanding that words are made up of small sounds and that the ability to distinguish those sounds in words and blend sounds together to form words is an essential part of the reading process.
To improve reading and language arts instruction in schools, the task force notes, the research base about what works in teaching beginning reading needs to be reflected in everything from preservice teacher training programs to ongoing professional development for teachers and paraprofessionals to textbooks and other classroom materials.
OC is a commercially published elementary school reading and writing program for grades K-6 that uses a balanced approach to reading instruction, including direct instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics, grade-appropriate decodable text, and a variety of classic and contemporary children's literature.

International Reading Association : Reading Today : What’s Hot, What’s Not for 2005
All are read a standard 178-word paragraph defining “hot” and “not hot.” Basically, “hot” refers to the level of attention a given topic is currently receiving.
It is also explained to respondents that their ratings of “hot” and “not hot” do not necessarily reflect their personal interest, or lack thereof, in a given topic.
Although the legislation of the Bush administration affected the topics on the “hot” list, it was the meta-analysis of reading research done by the National Reading Panel (www.nationalreadingpanel.org) that laid the groundwork for this legislation.

Hot reading is a technique used by psychics, mediums, palm readers, and the like that involves surreptitiously gaining information from clients.
Later, when the psychic does a reading and seems to make contact with a young man's mother, even the young man won't remember that he told the psychic before the show that he wanted to connect with his mother.
The psychic might have her agent bring a couple to the performance and when the psychic reveals to all that the couple's son committed suicide, everyone is convinced she's made contact.

Reading Online - Critical Issues: Literacy at the Millennium
Balanced reading instruction has been receiving a good deal of attention for the past 3 years (Pressley, 1998; Reutzel, 1999).Unfortunately, there is some disagreement as to the exact definition of the term.
The popularity of balanced reading and research-based practice results in part from the unpopularity of the term “whole language.” Whole language received much positive attention at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the '90s.
Since early intervention is hot, it seems logical that middle school reading and literacy would be rated as “not hot.” Indeed, the whole topic of adolescent literacy was until very recently receiving scant attention.

Instructor: What is reading recovery? - Hot Topics - Interview
It's a dynamic, intensive professional development program that trains teachers to work successfully with children who are most in need of extra help in reading and writing at a critical time in their lives.
Reading Recovery is a short-term program (20 weeks maximum) in which teachers work one-on-one with children--in addition to students' regular classroom instruction.
Without training, a classroom teacher cannot teach Reading Recovery but can put to work the core Reading Recovery strategy--observing children's reading behaviors, making hypotheses of what thought processes are going on, keeping running records of these observations, and so on.

A typical reading by Edward on his television show begins with him coming up with a letter or a sound in someone's name with whom he claims to be communicating ("I'm getting an R sound" or "I'm getting a C or a K sound...did anyone have someone pass away with that sound in their name?").
Someone will usually then raise their hand and he will continue asking them questions relating to them, or the deceased, making many guesses (some of which are right, some of which are wrong), until he comes up with a description of the deceased.
Skeptics say that Edward's techniques are identical with the technique of cold reading, one of the ways many demonstrated hoax psychics fool their clients and audiences.

What's Hot in Reading for 1999: Part III
Reading instruction has begun to move away from simply teaching phonics using a traditional letter-sound correspondence (the letter T makes the "t" sound) to fostering more of a "phonemic awareness" that makes children sensitive to breaking down spoken words into smaller sounds and also to blending these sounds back together to create words.
The web page for the Ithaca Sound Reading Program includes an overview of phonemic awareness, links to research articles, list of 40 phonemes, position statements, scientific articles, and many other relevant links related to reading, dyslexia, struggling readers and learning disabilities.
The author defines phonemic awareness, explains why it is important and how it fits in to the "whole language vs. phonics" debate, briefly lists appropriate teaching methods and includes a bibliography with links to abstracts of all the cited sources.
