Hot rolling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hot rolling is a metallurgical process in which the metal is passed through a pair of rolls and the temperature of the metal is above its recrystallization temperature, as opposed to cold rolling, which takes place below it.
Hot rolling is mainly used to produce sheet metal, or simple cross sections from billets.
Hot rolling is primarily concerned with manipulating material shape and geometry rather than mechanical properties; This is achieved by heating a component or material to its upper critical temperature and then applying controlled load which forms the material to a desired specification or size.

Rolling mill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rolling mill is a machine or factory for shaping metal by passing it between rollers.
Rolling mills are often incorporated into integrated steelworks, but also exist as separate plants and be used for other metals, and other materials.
By designing the rolls appropriately, it is possible to obtain iron or steel with various cross-sections, including I-shaped girders and railway rails.

The process of hot rolling takes a 9" slab and rolls it into a 3,500 foot coil of hot rolled sheet steel.
In just four minutes, the 9" slab is rolled into a coil of sheet steel a half a mile long, and as thin as a dime.
Hot rolled sheet is the ideal product for pipe and tubing, auto parts, rail cars, and construction and agricultural equipment.

 MSW Research
Initially the project concentrates on the hot rolling of steel, however it is hoped that the findings can be used in other rolling processes, for example cold rolling of steel or rolling of aluminium.
In a rolling mill the thickness of a steel slab is reduced by rolling between two work rolls in a mill stand (Figure 2).
The "Intelligent Roll Profile Optimisation System" should be able to suggest optimum profiles for all the work rolls in a hot strip finishing mill while minimising the number of different profiles required.

Jukka Kömi. Hot ductility of austenitic and duplex stainless steels under hot rolling conditions. ISBN 951-42-6560-2
Hot ductility of austenitic and duplex stainless steels under hot rolling conditions.
The effects of restoration and certain elements, nitrogen, sulphur, calcium and Misch metal, on the hot ductility of austenitic, high-alloyed austenitic and duplex stainless steels have been investigated by means of hot rolling, hot tensile, hot bending and stress relaxation tests.
The hot ductility of type 316L stainless steel determined by tensile tests was found to be better for nitrogen content of 0.05 wt-% than 0.02%, while in double-hit tensile tests the hot ductility values were identical.

Flatness control using a contact type of shapemeter for continuous hot strip rolling. | Metals, Metalworking and ...
Thin slab casting with integrated rolling lines have already proved that it is economic to produce 1mm-thick gauge strip(1-3), while the welding of transfer bar to enable continuous rolling on a conventional mill is already practiced on two mills in Japan and is producing 0.8mm thick strip commercially(4).
In the continuous rolling process using welded transfer bar and also in the slug bar rolling process, a thicker (leading) part of the coil is initially rolled in the mill to the coiler, before adjusting the roll gaps to roll ultrathin-gauge.
Even when rolling a single gauge, let alone in the flying gauge region, strip flatness is changing during rolling along the length of the coil due to various instability factors.

The hot rolled aluminium plate slab are a necessary raw material requirement for the processing of many high quality aluminium products, including aviation plates, PS sheets, CTP (Computer-to-plate) sheets, electronic foils, and container materials, while the latter two techniques that are of less cost can produce relative lower quality slabs.
The ideal proportion of hot rolled plate slab and continuous rolled plate slab is four to six, which means hot rolled plate slab capacity attributes for 40% of the total slab capacity.

The Modelling of Hot Rolling Processes using Neural Networks: A Bibliographical Review
In the case of metals being rolled, the knowledge of its magnitude is vital for the correct designing of the mechanical and electrical components of the rolling stands, as well in the development of mathematical models and automation algorithms for the hot rolling process.
Hot strength was determined using isothermal compression tests with cylindrical samples, with exception of a low C steel, which was tested using isothermal ring compression tests.
On the other hand, the modeling of hot rolling forces under industrial conditions is becoming a typical example of the application of the mathematical model-neural networks hybrid approach, as mentioned in the Introduction of this chapter.

Mill Roll Lubrication — A Cost Cutting Measure
Although the subject of hot roll lubrication has been around for a long time, recent experience has confirmed its value and benefit to the mill owner and their customers; the key is a professional approach and a commitment by all parties to make it work.
In the case of hot roll lubrication, reduced mill power consumption and lower loads, fewer roll changes with less regrinds higher output and improved strip surface finish can all be achieved along the way.
The lubricants are delivered to the roll bite as a dispersion, rather than as an emulsion and are volatilised as they contact the hot strip; any small quantities that find their way into the cooling water will rapidly separate into oil and water phases for easy disposal.

hot rolling is done above the recrystallization temperature (850°F for Al, and 1250°F for steel) and results in a fine grained wrought structure.
cold rolling is done near room temperature and produces better surface finishes (32-125 micro in.) and dimensional accuracy (0.004"-0.014"), but with strain hardening.
The force applied by the rollers creates a stress concentration at the center of the bar which may or may not lead to a central crack in the bar.

Metal Producing & Processing - Hot Topic: Cold Rolling
In cold rolling, one of the most important operating issues is control of the roll-gap geometry that affects strip flatness and cross-sectional strip profile.
In unstable conditions (“cold” rolls or strip width change), with hard and narrow strip format, the roll bending is incapable of guaranteeing strip flatness.
The purpose of roll coolant is fine control of the flatness; it cannot compensate for sudden changes.

Brass - Background, History, Raw Materials, Design, The Manufacturing Process, Quality Control
Pipes and tubes are formed by extruding, or squeezing rectangular billets of hot brass through a shaped opening, called a die, to form long, hollow cylinders.
This process is called cold rolling because the temperature of the brass is much lower than the temperature during hot rolling.
Cold rolling deforms the internal structure of the brass, or grain, and increases its strength and hardness.
