Hot swap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hot swapping (or Hotplugging) is the ability to remove and replace components of a machine, usually a computer, while it is operating.
These hot swap operations are generally used either to move a peripheral from one computer to another, or to allow a device to synchronize data with a computer.
In these systems hot swap is normally used for regular maintenance to the computer, or to replace a broken part.

TechOnLine - Introduction to Hot Swap   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Hot swap, hot plug, and hot dock are terms used interchangeably to refer to hot insertion and removal.
The proper hot swap of a mating card assembly may require specific di/dt control on each supply line, and a time delay for power-on reset (POR) of a slave controller before the higher voltage supplies are ramped up to drive the Rx/Tx circuitry.
The use of hot swap capability is growing, due to both the growth of applications such as HA environments, and industry standard requirements.

Go-HotSwap - Add HotSwap to Windows, Linux, Solaris and VxWorks
Go-HotSwap is not restricted to drivers that are hot swap compliant, such as drivers that fully support the Microsoft Windows 2000 PnP subsystem additions, and does not require the driver to be re-written in order to benefit from hot swap capabilities.
This enables hot swap aware user-mode drivers to be developed where possible, reducing the learning curve for the driver developer.

IT Resource Center forums - What is the difference between a hot-swap drive and a standard drive?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
There is only one major difference between a "Hot Swap" driver and not and that is the ability to be removed and added without screwing up the drive.
It is my understanding that: Normal drives require spin time, bus checking, etc...A hot swap drive has very little warm up time (spin time) to be able to read/write as well as power management to alleviate spiking on an active bus.
Normally, hot swap drives are in RAID configurations, so it makes sense to be able to move disks in and out with out downing the drive/system.
