Even so the Hotchkiss M1914 remained in French use until the end of the Second World War.
Variations of the Hotchkiss M1909 were however popular when fitted onto aircraft and tanks, where they were generally fired in short bursts.
The M1909 was produced by the U.S. as the Benet-Mercie Machine Rifle (adopted in 1909) where they were used during the 1916 expedition to Mexico; and by the British as the.303 Hotchkiss Machine Gun Mark I. To "dig in" was to entrench oneself in (usually) a defensive position.

 Firearm Technical Trivia, December 2000
Schwarzlose cloth belts wound up in a drum which attached to the gun from underneath (the same arrangement the Soviets would use some 25 years later in the Degtyarev RPD).
New trials were conducted, where the I-23, with a shorter barrel, fired 7,500 rounds from two barrels, without a single stoppage, "far outperforming" the competing Berthier and Hotchkiss guns.
After the latest round of tests the Madsen was still in first place, followed by the I-23, then the Berthier, and finally the Hotchkiss in fourth place.

The French Army 1914-18 (Men-at-Arms Series)
Before the Great War of 1914, the French Army had yet to reform itself after the defeat of the Franco Prussian War.
Though they had some excellent weaponry including the splendid French 75mm field gun, and the Hotchkiss heavy machine gun M1914, they lacked heavy guns and most of all, a modern appreciation that the outmoded doctrine of "l'audace" and always attack would win through.
They seem to have completely ignored the lessons of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 which proved that the only way for infantry to survive cannon fire and machine guns was to go to ground especially when attacking dug in and barbed wire protected opponents.

These were for additional protection against the stone splinters thrown up by artillery in the rocky and mountainous terrain of much of the Italian front.
I added this on the right hand side by cutting up and altering the Russian text included in the Emhar kit.
The kit is finished out of the box except for the addition of the 37mm Hotchkiss, which came from the RPM FT17 kit, and the frames for the stowage boxes, which were scratchbuilt out of plastic strip and stretched sprue (I was too lazy to build the actual stowage boxes!).

For fire support, the British kept the Vickers, but added a dial sight for indirect fire.
The French kept the Hotchkiss M1914 and the Japanese copied it, too.
The USSR had the Maxim, modified, with wheels for extra mobility (and weight!) The USA had the Browning M1917 water-cooled gun and was producing an air-cooled version, the M1919 A4 from 1934.

The disadvantage is that if you have to refill the belt in the field it is far more difficult and time consuming to pick up the individual links and refill them.
This gave them a flexible belt holding more than the 24 or 30 rounds that could be used in the confines of the small tanks.
The Type 11 (which was a Hotchkiss type) hopper held 6 of the 5 round chargers one on top of the other.

Plastic Soldier Review - Revell French Infantry
The weapon is well detailed and accurate, as is the operator, who can be seen wearing one of the semi-circular ammunition pouches for this weapon.
The other machine gun is the heavy Hotchkiss M1914, another well used weapon of the French.
Again properly detailed, this weapon sits in a small enclosure of sandbags, but it is being fired from the side, a method that would have been possible but not normal.
