Hotchkiss et Cie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hotchkiss was a French arms and car company established by American engineer Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, who was born in Watertown Connecticut.
Hotchkiss racers won the Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo in 1932, 1933, 1934, 1939, 1949 and 1950.
The name of the Hotchkiss firm is associated with a form of power transmission called the Hotchkiss drive.

 The Hotchkiss V twin Engine
Hotchkiss could well have acquired designs or skills from the local workforce, and in one book the V-twin engine is described by a contemporary journalist as having design similarities with RAF aero engines.
Perhaps the purchase of Hotchkiss by Morris was the final nail in the coffin of the BSA Light car, and faced with a need to make their own engines, and with increasing competition, decided to close the project.
Hotchkiss are most unlikely to have had a stock of aero engine parts left on the shelf, but appear not to have been in a position to design an engine themselves without outside help.

 THE FRENCH CONNECTION II
It was the Hotchkiss 1914 in the hands of the American Doughboys, the 7th Machinegun Battalion U.S. 3rd Division, that literally stopped the German advance cold at the Battle of Chateau-Thierry on May 27th, 1918, and it was all downhill from then on for the Kaiser's legion.
The Hotchkiss remained the primary medium-heavy machine gun used by the A.E.F throughout the summer of 1918 when most of the decisive battles of WWI were fought, and only replaced by the late arrival Browning in the fall of 1918.
Among Hotchkiss' design accomplishments in France were a new metallic cartridge for the French government, and a 5-barrel revolving cannon that was manufactured in four variations; a 37mm and a 40mm version for fortifications, plus a 47mm and a 57mm version built for naval use.

1939 HOTCHKISS Cabourg - Vintage European Automobiles club
Hotchkiss Drive: The term is found on the spec sheet of most American cars built before the 1980s.
Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss was born in 1826 in Sharon, Connecticut, where his father operated a hardware factory in the cradle of America's iron industry.
The postwar period was fallow for arms makers, so Hotchkiss took his business to France, where he established a factory outside Paris and developed the revolving machine gun.

Hotchkiss agreed to supply Morris with a Coventry-built copy of the Red Seal, and most important, without a deposit.
As a cash-raising survival exercise and to clear stocks, he slashed the price of the newly introduced 4-seater version of the Cowley by £100 from £525 to £425 and made smaller reductions to the rest of the range.
For 1925, the length of the chassis was increased by 6 inches to 9 feet and excellent four wheel brakes with 12 in dia drums fitted as standard (however, two wheel brakes were optional).

Few of these were made (1,450) and there followed a generation of Oxfords and Cowleys using an engine based on the Continental design made by Hotchkiss et Cie (later taken over by Morris).
At first a common chassis, radiator and engine were used for both Oxford and Cowley with the Oxford taking the role of the deluxe model.Changes and modifications were made from time to time.
The deal later proved uneconomic for Continental and Morris had copies made by Coventry based Hotchkiss, deliveries commencing in 1919 for what was now a two model range- a basic model, the Cowley, and the similar but better equipped Oxford.
